Overview

We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Technician to join our Estates Team at Sheffield's Northern General Hospital. Estates keeps essential power, heating, plumbing and mechanical systems, and the buildings and grounds safe and well-maintained for patients, visitors and staff. The team brings together a wide range of expertise—construction trades, technical work, building and site management, surveying, and more—to carry out inspections, maintenance and repairs across our sites.

This is a hands-on role where you will manage the day-to-day workload of operational and reactive engineering staff within Estates and supervise external engineering contractors to ensure works are completed on time and to agreed standards. You will need to be highly experienced in your trade and possess the management, people and communication skills required to lead an effective team. This is a full-time position with typical hours of 8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday, with opportunities for training and development including skills outside of your core trade (City and Guilds NVQ) and training for Authorised Person (AP) status.

You will be responsible for the full range of maintenance duties specific to your core trade, including non-routine, planned, corrective and breakdown maintenance tasks. You will also develop task lists, carry out regular audits, attend and advise Trust-wide Steering Groups and undertake regular Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and testing of mechanical systems. You will record and analyse results against historical data and provide condition and non-compliance reports as necessary. You will witness the testing of new systems, plant and equipment installed on Trust property, reconfirming correct operation and providing appropriate training to other Estates staff and users. You should be available for on-call and out-of-hours cover, with on-site presence within 30 minutes of a call and additional out-of-hours pay. You will be required to carry a Trust mobile phone and work proactively with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

* Carry out the full range of maintenance duties specific to your core trade, including non-routine, planned, corrective and breakdown tasks.
* Develop task lists and carry out regular audits.
* Attend and advise Trust-wide Steering Groups related to your expertise and ensure understanding and implementation across the Trust.
* Undertake regular Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and testing of mechanical systems; record, analyse results and issue appropriate reports.
* Witness testing of new systems and equipment, reconfirm operation and provide training to Estates staff and users.
* Be available for on-call and out-of-hours cover as required.

Qualifications

* Extensive experience within the mechanical trades and a proven ability to lead and supervise a team of engineering staff and contractors.
* Strong management, people, and communication skills.
* Ability to develop task lists, perform audits, and contribute to steering groups.
* Willingness to develop additional skills outside of core trade; City and Guilds NVQ considered beneficial; training for Authorised Person (AP) status desirable.
* Ability to work on-site within 30 minutes of a call and operate with initiative.

Working for our organisation

You will be working for an organisation that values and respects all staff and the community it serves. The Trust is a leader in the NHS and offers professional development and policies to support work-life balance, with a focus on service excellence for patients and their environment.

Note: Some sponsorship and visa information, data handling and recruitment-system specifics have been streamlined for this description. All communications are via the designated recruitment system, and you will be asked to confirm information as part of the application process. Applicants should ensure they check junk/spam folders for communications.
