Overview
Join to apply for the Postdoctoral Research Fellow, NATIONAL TRUST role at Guardian Jobs.
Do you have a passion for peatlands? Would you like to accelerate evidence-based lowland peat renewal? This fixed-term role (three years) is funded by the Nature Recovery Project and will drive insight and impact for the recovery of lowland peat in National Trust care and beyond.
We’re looking for an experienced postdoctoral researcher to advance knowledge on lowland peatland protection and recovery and to apply this to maximise benefits for nature and people. You’ll design and deliver research that increases understanding of scalable lowland peat recovery approaches such as paludiculture and nature renewal. Working with researchers and wider stakeholder groups, you’ll help identify where and how the National Trust can play a more significant role in lowland peat recovery in the longer term.
Base location is Swindon or another National Trust regional hub, with flexible and hybrid working arrangements. You should expect to be at a National Trust site for 40–60% of your working week and will travel to work with teams in lowland peat landscapes (e.g., Cambridgeshire Fens and Somerset Levels) and with partners across England.
This is a national role with a flexible contractual place of work and a 40–60% site requirement. We’ll discuss details at interview.
What you'll be doing
* Synthesize existing evidence, critically evaluate established and emerging solutions, and identify research and evidence gaps.
* Design and deliver practice-based research at applied sites in the Cambridgeshire Fens and Somerset Levels; help develop a longer-term strategic research funding pipeline and broader research network.
* Collaborate with partners and National Trust teams to understand enablers and blockers to delivery and help shape research priorities.
* Map current activity across England’s lowland peatlands and define the Trust’s strategic role; communicate insights and best practice to influence real-world outcomes.
Who we're looking for
* Post-doctoral researcher with a strong track record in large-scale ecosystem restoration and a solid understanding of peatland-specific issues (hydrology and biogeochemistry).
* Interest in working across disciplines to solve lowland peatland recovery challenges.
* Specialist knowledge to develop/follow research programmes and methodologies.
* Record of research outputs in high-quality publications and experience of managing research projects.
* Experience collaborating in applied research with a cross-sector network and the ability to communicate complex ideas to a range of stakeholders.
* Ability to participate in and develop internal and external networks and communities of practice.
The package
* Substantial pension scheme of up to 10% basic salary
* Free entry to National Trust places for you, a guest and your children (under 18)
* Rental deposit loan scheme
* Season ticket loan
* EV car lease scheme
* Perks at work discounts (gym memberships, shopping discounts, cinema discounts)
