Job Description - The Role

On Behalf of Arup, we are looking for a Senior Contaminated Land Consultant for a 6 month contract based in London.

Candidate Profile: Key accountabilities, skills & experience

The position is for a Senior Environmental (Contaminated Land) Consultant to work within our Land Quality team in London. Clients will include private developers, public sector authorities and other organisations. You will be working in a multi-disciplinary environment alongside other environmental, planning, engineering and urban design specialists, and will work closely with other technical disciplines (both internal and external to Arup) to deliver high quality environmental consultancy services. In this role, you'll be largely office based, with some site work, for example, to supervise ground investigations and remediation projects. From time-to-time site work may be more intensive.

Main Responsibilities:


* Technical delivery of contaminated land assessments.
* Managing junior staff supporting the delivery of contaminated land assessments.
* Writing environmental reports.
* Project management activities including programming and budget control.
* Interfacing with multi-disciplinary project teams.
* Communicating and liaising with clients.
* Engaging and negotiating with stakeholders.
* Designing and supervising contamination ground investigations/ contractors, including site work, scheduling chemical testing and checking factual investigation reports and invoices (note that Arup does not undertake the site work, we design and supervise in conjunction with geotechnical colleagues).
* Supporting senior staff during due diligence work.

The successful jobholder will require the following knowledge, skills and attributes:

* Excellent understanding of environmental legislation relating to contaminated land, and experience of application of relevant legislation, policy and guidance in respect to assessment for a range of project types.
* A strong focus on meeting and exceeding client requirements and a commitment to excellence.
* Strong client management skills.
* Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and be comfortable working on multiple tasks and projects at any one time.
* Proven ability in project management.
* Ability to manage and direct more junior staff.
* Good analytical skills with a focus on finding solutions in relation to assessment technical and project management issues.
* Strong verbal and written communication skills. Must have excellent report writing skills.
* Experience of working within a commercial environment, including client liaison, programme and time management, quality assurance and financial/budget control.
* A clear understanding of all levels of contaminated land assessment from initial land acquisitions, through desk study, investigation and assessment to remediation and to final remediation verification.
* Some wider technical expertise or at least a basic understanding, in some other areas of brownfield development would be expected. This could include waste classification, excavated materials management including the use of the DoWCoP, environmental permitting, and Environmental Impact Assessment.
* Qualifications:
* A good honours degree in a relevant subject.
* Member of a relevant institute (e.g. CIWEM, IES, Geological Society of London, RSC) and full Chartered status or working towards Chartered status.
