We are excited to offer a fantastic opportunity for an on‑site Electrician in HMP Cardiff, Knox Rd, Cardiff CF24 0UG.
The standard hours of work are 39 hours per week: Monday – Thursday 07:30 – 16:30, Friday 07:30 – 15:30. One in three weekends with a 15% uplift shift allowance.
At Amey, we’re supporting our justice client, His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS), by providing them with safe, clean and efficient prisons.
The Electrician plays an important part in ensuring the planned and reactive maintenance work within the prisons is carried out in a safe, compliant and timely manner.
Previous experience with planned preventative maintenance is preferred but not essential. While a Level 3 qualification is preferred, we are open to interviewing candidates with a Level 2 qualification.
Prison Security Clearance will be required (Amey will support you through this process).
What you will do
* Ensure Health & Safety standards are met across the contract
* Test and inspect electrical installations in line with current IEE wiring regulations
* Respond promptly to breakdowns, ensuring all work is carried out safely and efficiently
* Perform planned and preventive electrical maintenance and diagnose/replace failed domestic electrical components
* Actively fault‑find and problem‑solve on domestic electrical systems
* Undertake electrical installation activities according to provided designs and IET Wiring Regulations
* Monitor and order critical spares for all electrical services, and oversee the BMS System
* Support zero‑carbon initiatives, contributing to sustainability goals, and handle additional tasks as directed by your line manager
What you will bring
* City & Guilds 2367 or 2357 Level 2 Electrical Installation Works or equivalent
* BS7671 18th Edition; we will consider 17th Edition with upskilling to 18th Edition
* Good working knowledge of Health & Safety requirements
* Good working knowledge of planned and preventive maintenance operations
* Excellent organisational, time‑management and people skills
* Experience of working under pressure to tight deadlines
* Ability to work at heights, work independently, and use initiative
* Understanding of fire alarm and CCTV systems (desirable)
* Knowledge and experience of Electrical Systems and Electricity at Work Regulations
* Basic IT skills
