Power Systems Protection Engineer
Location: Leeds
Employment Type: Permanent
Salary: Competitive - Depending On Experience
If you're the kind of engineer who lights up at the thought of schematics, high-voltage networks, and complex protection systems, we want to talk to you. At Morson Projects, we’re working on some of the UK’s most significant energy infrastructure programmes and we’re growing our team of Protection Engineers to keep pace with demand.
This role is perfect for someone who’s experienced in substations, HV transmission networks, or protection and control system design, and wants to make a meaningful impact on the UK’s future power grid.
About Morson Projects
We’re a well-established, multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy working across the energy, infrastructure, nuclear, and defence sectors. Our Power team supports a wide range of projects across transmission and distribution, and we pride ourselves on solving complex technical challenges with creativity and collaboration.
Please note: Due to project requirements, candidates must have the right to work in the UK without current or future sponsorship needs.
The Role
As a Power Systems Protection Engineer, you’ll be responsible for designing and developing protection systems that ensure safe, stable, and reliable power transmission. You’ll work on high-profile projects alongside some of the most respected engineers in the industry, contributing to everything from early-stage design to site commissioning.
Here’s what your role could involve:
Substation Protection Design
Develop single-line diagrams (SLDs), protection schematics, wiring diagrams, and relay settings.
Design protection schemes for transformers, feeders, overhead lines, and busbars.
Apply National Grid (NGTS) and DNO standards across all design activities.
High Voltage System Integration
Work on 132kV and above - designing systems that manage real-time fault detection and isolation.
Deliver solutions that align with Grid Code compliance, system stability, and safety margins.
Lead protection coordination studies, fault analysis, and grading reports.
Digital Substation & SCADA Integration
Support implementation of IEC 61850, SCADA systems, and networked protection architecture.
Configure RTUs, interface with substation automation, and integrate with SCADA networks.
Contribute to the design of LVAC/LVDC auxiliary systems, UPS, and battery sizing.
Testing, Commissioning & Assurance
Liaise with commissioning teams during FAT, SAT, and on-site validation.
Ensure design deliverables meet project quality and compliance standards.
Provide technical input during hazard reviews and risk assessments.
This role isn’t about just delivering drawings - it’s about protecting the UK’s energy future, one intelligent design at a time.
Who We’re Looking For
We’d love to hear from you if you have:
Experience in HV protection system design (132kV and above preferred)
Solid knowledge of relay settings, fault analysis, and protection coordination
Familiarity with IEC 61850, SCADA, and automation systems (ideal but not essential)
A background in substation design, DNO projects, or transmission system engineering
A methodical approach to technical challenges and a strong attention to detail
Confidence working with clients, stakeholders, and multidisciplinary teams
Whether you're currently with a DNO, consultancy, EPC, or TSO - this role offers a platform to deepen your technical expertise and take your career forward.
