Overview
The Welfare Rights Project Officer will deliver specialist welfare rights advice and casework to clients, support the development of welfare rights projects, and contribute to campaigns and policy influencing work based on evidence from frontline services.
Duties
* Advice and Casework: Provide high-quality, confidential welfare rights advice and representation to clients on benefits entitlement, appeals, and related issues. Manage a caseload, ensuring accurate record-keeping and compliance with data protection and quality standards. Support clients to prepare and present appeals to the DWP and tribunals. Keep up to date with welfare reform and social security legislation.
* Project Delivery and Development: Deliver outreach sessions, workshops, and training for service users and partner organisations. Support the design and delivery of welfare rights projects that improve financial inclusion and reduce poverty. Monitor and evaluate project outcomes, preparing reports and case studies for funders and stakeholders.
* Partnership and Engagement: Work collaboratively with local agencies, advice networks, and community organisations. Contribute to policy and campaign work by identifying trends and systemic issues from client experiences.
* General Duties: Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation, guidance, and best practice. Contribute to team meetings, supervision, and continuous improvement initiatives. Uphold the charity’s values of equality, inclusion, and empowerment.
Essential Requirements
* Proven experience providing welfare rights or social security advice.
* Strong understanding of current benefits system, appeals processes, and welfare reform.
* Excellent communication, advocacy, and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to manage own workload and meet deadlines.
* Commitment to equality, diversity, and anti‑poverty principles.
Desirable Requirements
* Experience working in a voluntary sector or community‑based setting.
* Experience developing and delivering workshops or training.
* IT proficiency with case management systems and Microsoft Office.
* Knowledge of related areas such as housing, debt, or employment rights.
