The successful candidate will assume a direct clinical role within the department, sharing all facilities equally with the existing consultants. This is a full-time fixed term post (11 PAs) General Ophthalmologist with special interest in Medical retinal diseases/ Uveitis. The appointee will be joining 32 Consultant Ophthalmologist posts already established. The successful candidate will work 11 PA’s a week, which will include an 8 DCC and 2 SPA split (Flexible working may be considered) with additional activities to be discussed. It is expected that the successful applicant will play an active role in the consultant on call rota
Main duties of the job
The Consultant will, in conjunction with colleagues:
i. Provide theatre cover as below.
ii. Provide an Ophthalmic service in accordance with the agreed timetable and subsequent job plan.
iii. Provide trustwide 1 in 10 on call cover
iv. Supervise trainee staff within the Trust.

1. Full GMC Registration
Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
2. FRCOphth or equivalent
3. MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
Desirable criteria
4. Postgraduate degree: e.g. MD, PhD Postgraduate qualification in Education or significant experience in post graduate training
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
5. Competent Medical Retina consultant with experience in working autonomously
6. Evidence of specific Ophthalmology training in a fellowship programme.
Management and Administration Experience
Essential criteria
7. Ability to manage and lead medical/surgical teams
8. Ability to lead on smooth and efficient running of the unit
9. Ability to organise, prioritise and manage high intensity workload
Desirable criteria
10. Ability to develop, present and operationalise coherent ideas for service development/ delivery
Teaching, Audit and Research
Essential criteria
11. Experience of supervising junior medical staff
12. Commitment to formal and informal teaching of medical staff, AHPs and medical students
13. Evidence of participation in audit
14. Ability to extrapolate clinical research evidence to care for individual patients

15. Evidence of having conducted a practice-changing audit
