Test Manager (Permanent, Hybrid)
Purpose: To ensure the predictable and successful delivery of software for AQA's key operational systems through providing leadership and hands‑on support in the area of test for programmes and projects as required. All software delivered is tested in line with defined requirements, industry best practices, departmental standards and wider AQA policies and procedures. The role supports AQA’s transition to a single, consistent set of cloud‑based technologies and an agile delivery model in line with current software development best practices (Scrum/Kanban, continuous delivery) and automation to continually improve and enhance that technology for new and changing business needs.
Responsibilities
* Lead and manage all test activities across functional, non‑functional, automated and manual testing.
* Drive continuous improvement in testing processes and tools aligned to agile principles.
* Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders and ensure timely, high‑quality delivery of software solutions.
* Mentor and coach team members, driving personal and professional development and cross‑skilling.
* Identify ways to continually improve team processes and ways of working.
* Provide regular, simple, clear and accurate reporting and tracking on test activities.
* Line manage test team members to get the best outcomes for individuals and AQA in line with AQA’s practices, policies and procedures.
* Model leadership behaviours with confidence and continuously seek to enhance performance in line with business objectives.
Qualifications
* Significant experience in leading functional and non‑functional testing teams, including automation.
* Strong understanding of agile software development lifecycle and testing methodologies.
* Proven ability to manage, mentor and develop technical teams.
* Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
* Experience with tools such as JIRA, MTM, TFS or similar.
* Broad understanding of testing and its role, relevance and application in either a commercial or an educational environment.
* Excellent understanding of different types of testing (functional, non‑functional and user acceptance) including relevant artefacts and suitable application.
* Strong understanding of the use of technology to improve the efficiency, reliability and repeatability of the testing discipline.
* Good understanding of the software development lifecycle in an agile setting.
* Skilled at leading a team with individuals across a range of geographical locations.
* Experienced in working with third‑party suppliers and vendors.
* Excellent planning and reporting skills.
* Strong people management skills with the ability to inspire and motivate team members and other colleagues to meet deliverables and adhere to agreed processes and ways of working.
* Ability to work effectively across all levels of the organisation, leading by example to develop and maintain effective working relationships with a range of partners and stakeholders.
* Excellent communication skills including the ability to work collaboratively, negotiate, influence and provide constructive challenge.
* Data savvy and able to analyse, interpret and report back complex information in a meaningful way.
* Demonstrable experience in successfully leading small Software Solutions teams to achieve personal and business success.

Salary and Contract
Salary: £63,866 – £72,000 (Permanent, Hybrid – 2x days a week in the office).
