The Role
As Design Manager, you will lead the design management process within project teams, ensuring delivery aligns with client specifications and governance standards. Your key responsibilities include:
Tender Stage
* Review Tender / Remit documentation and establish AmcoGiffen design scope and responsibilities, including identification of BIM requirements.
* Review procedures and suggest improvements.
* Assist with the consultant selection process and ensure the design scope is allocated to an appropriate designer.
* Prepare the Design Brief.
* Ensure an appropriate Category of Design Check is identified.
* Agree the design programme and monitor progress through the pre‑contract phase.
* Act as the main interface between the Design Consultant and the bid or project team to ensure the flow of information.
* Review quotations/proposals from designers against the brief and ensure all required scope items are priced and programmed.
* Communicate project risks and design assumptions to the bid team.
* Identify and raise Technical Queries for design and BIM related items.
* Assist with reviewing CDM Competency Assessments from designers.
* Help write / prepare Tender submission responses.
Contract Stage
* Conduct and facilitate the Design Start‑up Meeting.
* Assist the commercial team in preparing information for the designer appointment.
* Complete the Design / Engineering Management Plan.
* Ensure information to complete design is identified and exchanged on time and in accordance with the project BIM Execution plan where applicable.
* Ensure the design is checked and certified appropriately.
* Challenge the design consultant on residual risks and communicate them to the Project Delivery Team.
* Monitor the progress of design delivery against the agreed programme.
* Conduct interdisciplinary coordination meetings.
* Identify and raise Technical Queries/Requests for Information for design and BIM related items.
* Conduct Design Reviews.
* Ensure changes are identified and managed in accordance with the change procedure, working with the commercial teams.
* Review designer performance and record scores in the performance database.
Ideal Candidate
* Experience as Design Manager in a multi‑disciplinary rail and civils contracting environment.
* Extensive experience managing multi‑disciplinary civil and rail projects.
* Degree, HNC, HND in Civil Engineering or equivalent technical experience.
* Knowledge of electrical disciplines related to solar and EV projects is advantageous.
* Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
