Chief Information Officer (CIO)
The University
Aston University is a mid-sized dual-intensive university ranked in the top 25 universities in the United Kingdom. We are an agile and innovative organisation that thrives on collaboration and partnerships with businesses and the community. Our integrated placement year, our applied high-impact research, and our commitment to enhancing the employability and social mobility of our students all help to make Aston University distinct both nationally and internationally.
The Role
Aston University is seeking an innovative and strategic technology leader to join us as Chief Information Officer (CIO). Reporting to the Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive, in this pivotal executive role, you will help shape and execute the University's digital technology vision, with a strong emphasis on developing a comprehensive AI strategy throughout the institution.
This is a new role for Aston University, and as the CIO, the successful candidate will be a bold leader, ready to challenge the status quo and transform the perception of Digital Services from a cost centre to a value creator. Your mission will be to ensure that our digital investments not only support institutional growth but also enhance academic excellence and operational efficiency. By shifting from a gatekeeper to an enabler, you will foster AI-driven, data-informed decision-making, ensuring technology serves as a key driver of our Aston 2030 strategy. Your collaborative approach will unite various functions across the University, promoting an integrated pathway to innovation while balancing risk with progressive technological advancements.
The successful candidate will refine and expand Aston University's Digital Enterprise Strategy to align with our strategic objectives, while leading digital transformation initiatives that enhance research capabilities and stakeholder engagement. A key focus will be on creating and executing a comprehensive AI strategy that fosters innovation in research, academic support, and administrative operations, all while ensuring the ethical deployment of AI.
Your responsibilities also include overseeing the IT function to maintain robust governance, data security, and compliance with regulations, thereby ensuring a high level of cyber security and seamless digital support for students and staff. Additionally, you will oversee digital projects to prioritise initiatives aligned with the University's strategies for maximum return on investment. A significant aspect of the role is to define the digital services workforce strategy and drive automation initiatives for improved operational efficiency, alongside building strong relationships with academic, research, and administrative teams, as well as external partners and vendors.
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
* Proven experience in a senior technology leadership role, preferably in higher education or a complex organisational environment.
* Strong understanding of digital transformation, AI strategy, cybersecurity, and IT governance.
* Excellent leadership and communication skills to foster collaboration across diverse teams and stakeholders.
* A visionary with the ability to articulate and implement a clear strategy in alignment with institutional objectives.
* A proactive approach to problem-solving, with a track record of driving successful digital initiatives.
At Aston University, you will work with cross-functional teams that are at the forefront of digital innovation in education. You will lead a vibrant and diverse team poised to make a significant impact. You will contribute to shaping the future of digital technologies in higher education while ensuring a safe and secure digital environment for all stakeholders.
If you're ready to lead Aston University into the digital future, we invite you to apply for the CIO position and be a part of our journey toward excellence in digital innovation.
