Research Software Engineer (Sustainable computing, Green Algorithms Initiative)

Join to apply for the Research Software Engineer (Sustainable computing, Green Algorithms Initiative) role at University of Cambridge

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Research Software Engineer to join our team and the Green Algorithms Initiative, one of the leading academic teams in the field of sustainable computing.

Responsibilities

* Develop, disseminate and maintain the existing resources as well as support the design of new emerging tools related to the group's activities. Notably, the Green Algorithms Dashboard for HPC (https://dashboard.green-algorithms.org/login) and the popular online calculator (https://calculator.green-algorithms.org/), ensuring that they meet software engineering best practices.
* Develop both backend and frontend components of these tools, i.e. work on the architecture (e.g. databases, backend/frontend interface), user‑interface (website, dashboard, API), and related software tooling.
* Work closely with the Project Leads to help scope, gather requirements for, and guide on technical choices and directions.
* Identify and implement opportunities to improve the performance, sustainability, and quality of the applications.

This is a particularly timely position at a moment when the environmental impacts of computing and AI are being increasingly debated. If needed, training (both technical and on sustainability topics) will be available to the post-holder.

The Green Algorithms Initiative (https://www.green-algorithms.org/), led by Dr Loic Lannelongue, is a world‑leading project in the field of green computing focusing on quantifying and reducing the environmental impacts of computational science. The tools and frameworks developed and maintained by the group are used internationally and include the popular Green Algorithms online calculator, server‑specific monitoring tools, and the GREENER Principles for Environmentally Sustainable Computational Science. The group has a strong commitment to making all tools available open‑source to the computing community. The Green Algorithms Initiative has received both nominations and awards for its contributions to environmentally sustainable research (e.g. HDR‑UK Impact Award).

You will be part of the Lannelongue group (https://www.lannelongue-group.org/) and work in close conjunction with the senior scientists in the Green Algorithms Initiative, including Dr Loic Lannelongue and Professor Michael Inouye. You will also work closely with our team of expert computational scientists, HPC support teams in collaborating institutions, Research Software Engineers, and users to help deliver software with real scientific and sustainability impacts. The post-holder will have a degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Computational Science‑based discipline or equivalent experience.

The preferred candidates will be flexible and independent to learn new languages and find the right tool for the right problem, in order to propose solutions to the overall project lead for eventual implementation. They will embrace working as part of an interdisciplinary team, adjusting to a fast‑moving ecosystem. They will have experience in software engineering and a keen interest in the intersection between computing, science and environmental sustainability.

The funding for this post is available for two years from commencement.

This is a full‑time position, but we welcome applications of no less than 70% FTE per week.

Location

Victor Phillip Dahdaleh Heart & Lung Research Institute, Biomedical Campus, Papworth Road, Trumpington, Cambridge CB2 0BD or (approx 2 miles south of city centre).
