Deputy Matron Surgery, Women's & Oncology Theatres.

Are you an experienced perioperative practitioner looking to progress your career? Do you thrive on challenge and diversity in your working week? If the answer is yes, then keep reading.

At Oxford University NHS Foundation Trust, we are seeking a Deputy Matron for Theatres to join our cross-site team which includes a ten-theatre suite, Day Surgery Unit and Overnight Recovery Unit at the Churchill Cancer Centre, five theatres in our Women’s Centre (including obstetrics) and four theatres and Day Case Unit at the Horton Hospital in Banbury.

To succeed at this role, you will require extensive theatre experience, must be a highly motivated, enthusiastic, and a pro-active team player with proven leadership and management skills. You will need to be an excellent communicator, willing to work collaboratively across sites and services, able to motivate others by providing positive, professional, and accountable leadership and will role model both the Trust and NHS Values. You will also have a flexible and adaptable attitude. Previous managerial experience in the peri-operative environment is essential.


Main duties of the job

OUH is world-renowned for its cutting-edge developments and there are strong links with Oxford University. Our theatres provide a wide range of services providing innovative technologies and procedures, including participation in the national transplant program, multi-speciality robotic surgery and benign & oncology procedures aligned with British Association of Day Surgery recommendations.

In this role you will work closely with the Matron, Directorate Manager and Clinical Director to provide transformational leadership and change management across our sites. Your portfolio will include visibility in the perioperative environment supporting Clinical Governance, Health & Safety of staff & patients, leadership, and nursing management. Areas of responsibility will include creation of new patient pathways with clinical services, staff management and development, and optimisation of theatre utilisation. This will be an exciting and challenging role for an individual who has the desire to develop, whist still maintaining a key contribution to patient care within the perioperative environment.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To act as a clinical expert, leading progressive nursing practice and contributing to the strategic and operational management of theatres.

To be responsible and accountable for clinical governance and ensuring theatres deliver high standards of evidence-based quality care for patients.

To be responsible for the management and development of staff in the perioperative environment.

To ensure supervision / training to staff and students is delivered, policies / procedures are implemented and evaluated and that educational / development opportunities are optimised.

To ensure the efficient and effective utilisation of material and human resources within agreed budgets and to act as an authorised signatory.

To provide support to the Matron and deputise as required.


Person specification


Educational & Qualifications

* • Post registration qualification or equivalent experience in a Perioperative Environment
* • Current professional registration with NMC or HCPC
* • Demonstrable expertise in nursing
* • Experience of delivering projects
* • Knowledge and experience of change management & service improvement
* • Understanding of clinical governance and audit
* • Evidence of relevant managerial experience within a clinical environment understanding and managing HR and Finance
* • Committed to professional development of self and colleagues, and to the advancement of nursing.
* • Experience in introducing and managing nurse-led practice.
* • Advanced skills in electronic patient record and other hospital IT systems
