Overview
An established environmental and planning consultancy is looking to appoint a Principal Planning Consultant to join their growing planning team. This is a senior role for an experienced professional who enjoys leading complex projects, mentoring colleagues, and providing strategic planning advice to clients.
You’ll play a key role in delivering planning and environmental work across a range of multidisciplinary projects, working closely with senior leadership while helping shape the development of the planning function.
The Role
In this position, you will lead and contribute to a variety of planning and environmental projects, ensuring high technical standards and delivering work that supports successful planning outcomes for clients.
Key responsibilities include:
* Leading planning input on complex and multidisciplinary projects
* Reviewing planning policy, legislation, and environmental considerations affecting development proposals
* Supporting and preparing planning applications and Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA)
* Managing project programmes, budgets, and resources
* Liaising with clients, regulatory authorities, and project stakeholders
* Leading and coordinating teams of specialist sub-consultants
* Preparing high-quality technical reports, documentation, and expert evidence where required
* Providing mentorship, guidance, and line management to members of the planning team
* Contributing to departmental strategy and business development activities
What We\'re Looking For
* Strong experience in planning and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)
* Professional membership with RTPI or CIWM (or working towards it)
* Previous consultancy or private sector planning experience
* Experience managing complex projects and multidisciplinary teams
* Strong written, analytical, and communication skills
* Ability to manage budgets, programmes, and client relationships
* A relevant degree (MSc desirable if Planning is not the first degree)
* Full UK driving licence
Experience in minerals and waste planning would be advantageous but is not essential.
