The BMJ is seeking a dynamic, efficient, and highly organized individual to join as an Editorial Production Assistant. This role offers an excellent opportunity to collaborate with editors, authors, and reviewers, supporting the submission and peer review process of a leading international journal.
As part of the Publishing Services team, you will be the main contact for queries from authors, reviewers, and editors. You will manage the journal’s inbox and oversee daily tasks within the submission system, working closely with editors to ensure efficient manuscript processing. The role also involves developing and improving journal workflows and contributing to various projects across the organization.
Responsibilities
1. Provide support to authors during submission, guiding them through the process.
2. Update section and technical editors on article progress and follow up proactively with authors and reviewers.
3. Support editors by attending meetings, sending commissioning emails, organizing manuscripts in the submission system, and producing reports.
4. Liaise with authors and editors regarding guidelines, deadlines, conflicts of interest, appeals, Open Access payments, and policy queries.
5. Collaborate on Scholar One system updates, internal processes, and improvements.
6. Oversee posting of prepublication history files on bmj.com.
7. Manage the journal’s reviewer remuneration initiative.
8. Coordinate with the transfers team and authors to transfer rejected manuscripts to suitable BMJ journals.
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
1. At least 1 year of experience in a publishing office, ideally STM.
2. Experience with journal submission systems, preferably Scholar One.
3. Knowledge of Google Workspace is beneficial but not essential.
4. Experience handling queries from authors and editors, and assisting with peer review processes.
