Your role: As a Junior User Experience Designer, you will be joining the growing and exciting Digital Excellence community who are continually sharing knowledge and expertise. We are all passionate about user centred design, critical thinking, problem solving and designing and building digital services and products. You will be part of a supportive UCD community and be paired with a mentor who will invest in your development. You will work together to expand on your skills in this profession. Our User Experience Designers champion inclusive design practices throughout our project lifecycles, ensuring solutions are accessible to as many users as possible. This includes engaging with diverse user research, applying accessibility guidelines and legislation, and advocating for inclusive design principles in your deliverables. Our offices are in a variety of locations including London, Manchester and Glasgow. We offer hybrid working, however depending on your project you may have to travel to client locations. What you’ll do: Use different techniques to understand users and their needs, so that you can translate user stories and propose user-focused, evidence-based design approaches. Design and prototype user interfaces ensuring alignment with user needs and business goals for some of our public and private sector clients. Advocate for accessible and impactful services, ensuring solutions meet accessibility and inclusivity standards. Work in a fast-paced, evolving environment and use an iterative method and flexible approach to enable rapid Agile delivery. Communicate across organisational and technical boundaries, understanding the context and making complex and technical information simple and accessible for non-technical audiences. Your profile: You will bring the below skills and experience: A keen interest in the field of User Experience Design and User-Centred Design, keeping up to date with industry developments and conducting self-led learning. SC (Security Check) Clearance. Experience of working with a wider User Centred Design team. An empathetic approach and ability to listen to the needs of technical and business stakeholders to interpret them clearly for both audiences. Working knowledge of iterative design process and UCD methodologies. Competence in using design tools to prototype user interfaces at different levels of fidelity to test and validate designs. Ability to build prototypes using code to create dynamic prototypes using HTML, CSS and JavaScript at a basic level. We are specifically looking for some experience with GOV.UK Prototyping Kit and Figma. Knowledge of Government Digital Service (GDS) service standards and GDS design principles. Knowledge of relevant accessibility standards and legislation, such as the Web Content Accessibility Regulations (WCAG). Clear and effective communication of design decisions to present concepts to team members and stakeholders. Ideally, you would also have: At least 1 year of experience in a User Experience Designer role or working in a design-focused role in a professional setting. A design portfolio that showcases the design work you have produced. A love of learning – you are eager to take opportunities to develop your skills in parallel with the needs of your clients. Experience, understanding or interest in accessibility testing or inclusive design principles. Some experience testing and auditing assistive technology (JAWS, Dragon, ZoomText) and accessibility features for Windows and macOS. Ability to analyse code for accessibility issues in HTML and CSS.
