School Nurse

The role of the School Nurse in Barnardo's Health quality & Inclusion team, is a national hybrid position working across the organisation.

Are you a Specialist Community Public Health (SCPHN) School Nurse driven by a desire to make a difference to the lives of children, young people, and families? We are looking for an experienced Nursing Midwifery Council registered professional, to help us achieve our purpose at Barnardo's: Changing Childhoods, Changing Lives.

Barnardo's has a new 3-year strategy, which identifies the need to support those children and young people who are at greatest risk of poor health. Barnardo's national Health Quality and Inclusion Team are integral to ensuring the success of this strategy.

This is an extremely exciting time to join Barnardo's and the Health, Quality and Inclusion team. We are an ambitious and dynamic team, that include both clinical and non-clinical experts, enabling Barnardo's to become a leading integrated Health and Social Care Charity.

Barnardo's is here because too many children and young people across the UK are missing out on a good childhood, and on the opportunity to thrive into adults. We are looking for a dynamic and creative School Nurse with a solution focused approach to help drive and identify opportunity and improvements in our current and future public health 0-19 services across the country.

As the School Nurse within the HQI team you will require an overall understanding along with recent extensive clinical experience in delivering the 5-19 (25 SEND) element of the Healthy Child Programme. You will be skilled at delivering integrated child and family health services for CYP, while working alongside key stakeholders.

The role will focus on school nursing, adolescence and care leavers, the range and scope of services will include both face-to-face and digital delivery methods, both in place and under development. The post holder will support the ongoing provision of high-quality specialist school nursing interventions for children, young people, and their families/carers.

The position will support and develop new and existing partnerships that deliver public health content for school age children services. Leading on the design, delivery and modernisation of service change across care groups, specialisms, and health related settings (such as family hubs). There is an expectation that the registered professional will be knowledgeable and have a comprehensive understanding of local and national health-related policies. With an expectation that you will be required to provide selected help and expertise to children's service colleagues as a specialism expert.

You will need to be a driven and collaborative team player who has proven ability to support and influence at an organisational level and will have experience working within or alongside a range of health sectors and with a variety of health stakeholders.

This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of one of the UK's leading children's charities, working hard to reduce health inequalities and help more children to feel safer, happier, healthier, and more hopeful.

See Job Description & Job Specification for additional requirements (key responsibilities & key skills).

Salary shown is a salary range, the starting salary can be negotiated for exceptional candidates.

When completing your application please refer to your skills knowledge and experience in relation to the Person Specification, Job Description and Additional Information document (if applicable). This should be done with an understanding of the context of the role described.

Please hold Thursday 29th January 2026 for in-person interviews in London and a virtual Children & Young Person's panel week commencing 26th January 2026.

Pay & Reward Framework

We know that our colleagues go above and beyond in delivering our vital work, driven by their passion and commitment to Barnardo's . We also know that we can only realise our ambitions and achieve better outcomes for more children, thanks to the talent, hard work and creativity of our people.

For all these reasons, we are committed to a new approach to pay and reward, to ensure it is fair, attractive and progressive, which was rolled out in April 2023. This is a positive change for the charity, and a part of our Strategy. It will assist us in supporting colleagues to belong, thrive and grow in their colleague journey at Barnardo's and in time will offer clear routes of progression for colleagues in both their career and their pay.

Whilst the full pay band and salary range is advertised, our approach to starting salaries is to appoint between the minimum to mid-point of the pay band – this ensures that pay steps are available to reward our colleagues annually based on their contribution to excellence and alignment to our values and behaviours. More details on Barnardo's pay framework can be found upon application.
