Under the supervision of a class teacher, the role typically involves working with pupils who have special educational needs, learning difficulties, disabilities, or exhibit occasional behavioural problems. This may include pupils with high learning abilities ('gifted/talented').
Responsibilities include:
1. Developing and applying knowledge of pupils' learning needs to provide appropriate support.
2. Supporting pupils with literacy and numeracy tasks, clarifying instructions.
3. Assisting pupils in using ICT and other equipment to enhance learning.
4. Motivating and encouraging pupils to focus on tasks and become independent learners.
5. Providing support, care, and supervision within and outside the classroom, including personal care needs such as toileting, eating, and mobility.
6. Working with pupil groups to promote acceptance and inclusion of pupils with special needs.
7. Assisting in the preparation and supervision of educational visits and off-site activities.
8. Attending staff meetings and training sessions as required.
9. Supervising pupils during assessments, cloakrooms, showers, toilet facilities, playgrounds, and transport.
10. Following school procedures and reporting concerns to the Headteacher, including health and safety risks.
11. Adhering to school policies and procedures.
