Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine

This post is suitable for those with an interest in Intensive Care Medicine as well as General Anaesthesia or other allied specialties. The role will include an average of one week every eight weeks in ICU/outreach, as well as sessions in another specialty (e.g., anaesthesia, acute medical specialties or emergency medicine).
The post holder is expected to be flexible in working patterns, undertaking theatre work on any site when required, and will demonstrate a strong commitment to the training and education of trainees and other staff.
Main duties of the job
* Maintenance of high-quality patient‑centred care
* Shared responsibility for day‑to‑day management of the service and participation in strategic planning
* Teaching and training within the multidisciplinary service
* Active involvement in multidisciplinary team meetings and directorate clinical governance activity
* Active participation in continuing medical education

Person Specification
Qualifications / Training
* Entry on the GMC Specialist Register or be within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at the time of interview or provide GMC‑confirmed eligibility for entry on the Specialist Register
* FICM or equivalent
* Evidence of being up to date and fit to practice safely, and aware of own training needs
* Royal College Fellowship
Previous Experience
* Broad range of experience in critical care
* Experience supervising undergraduates, doctors in training and other colleagues
* Ability to offer and be accountable for full, independent expert diagnostic opinion
* Evidence of leading on patient safety issues and effecting change in practice
* Demonstrated interest and commitment to the specialty
* Fully competent in stabilising and managing patients in critical care
* Published papers and original work in peer‑reviewed journals
* Understanding of basic principles of audit, evidence‑based practice and clinical quality improvement initiatives
* Demonstrable experience and participation in research
Skills
* Evidence of engagement with clinical governance and learning from errors
* Evidence of engagement with appraisal and revalidation
* Situational awareness and good decision‑making
* Ability to teach clinical skills effectively
* Ability to critically appraise published evidence
Knowledge
* Understanding of basic principles of audit, evidence‑based practice and clinical quality improvement initiatives
* Comprehensive knowledge of all domains within the GMC standards of Good Medical Practice
