An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Financial Controller to join a thriving SME business at its Head Office in Warrington. This is a key senior finance role, responsible for managing a small finance team and overseeing day-to-day financial operations while providing strategic financial insight to support business performance and continued growth.
The Role Reporting into the Finance Director, the Financial Controller will take ownership of the full finance function, managing the day-to-day financial operations of the business and leading a small finance team of 2 Finance Assistants. You will be responsible for producing accurate management accounts and financial reporting, leading budgeting and forecasting processes, ensuring statutory compliance, and managing cashflow. This is a hands-on role with significant visibility across the wider business.
Key Responsibilities:
Oversee daily financial operations including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, banking, and general ledger activity
Produce accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual management accounts and financial statements
Ensure compliance with accounting standards, tax regulations, and internal financial controls
Lead budgeting and forecasting processes, monitoring performance against budget
Manage company cashflow, working capital, and liquidity, identifying cost-saving opportunities
Provide financial insight and analysis to support operational and strategic decision-making
Support year-end processes and liaise with external auditors
Oversee VAT returns, Corporation Tax submissions, and regulatory filings
Work closely with project managers and department heads on financial performance, costs, and margins
Maintain finance systems and ensure all records are accurate and up to date
Develop, mentor, and lead the finance team, fostering a high-performance culture
Drive continuous improvement of financial processes, controls, and procedures
Perform any additional duties reasonably requested by senior management
Experience & Qualifications:
Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent experience)
Proven experience as a Senior Management Accountant, Financial Controller or similar senior finance role
Construction industry experience is essential
Manufacturing sector experience is desirable
Strong experience producing management accounts
Experience managing year-end processes and external audits
Proven ability to manage cashflow, budgeting, and forecasting
Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Office and advanced Excel
Experience using accounting software (Sage 50, Eque2 Construct, or Deltek advantageous)
Understanding of payroll processes
Demonstrable experience managing and developing a finance team
Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle
