Overview
You will be an essential first point of contact for all court users. There will be regular contact with the judiciary and assisting the administrative staff. You will meet members of the public, which may include vulnerable witnesses, and their legal representatives; prepare court /hearing rooms, and complete documentation, as well as ensuring the court runs efficiently. You will also carry out some general clerical work as required to support the work of HMCTS. Ushers work within a team with regular management support and are responsible for their own time. These operational roles are customer facing, requiring successful applicants to be office based to provide HMCTS services to the public.
Standard full time working hours are 37 hours per week. HMCTS welcomes part-time, flexible and job-sharing working patterns, where they meet the demands of the role and business needs and are agreed prior to appointment. All applications for part-time, flexible and job-sharing working patterns will be considered in accordance with the MoJ\'s Flexible Working policy. Applications for part-time working would be considered however due to the nature of the role the minimum hours would be 30 hours per week. This post is based at York County Court, Piccadilly House, 55 Piccadilly, York, YO1 9WL. For this post, occasional travel will be required for cover when needed. Requests for virtual interviews and alternate dates will only be considered in exceptional circumstances or as part of a reasonable adjustment.

Responsibilities
* Provide high-quality customer service to court users and maintain a calm, professional demeanor in sometimes challenging situations.
* Meet and assist members of the public, including vulnerable witnesses and their legal representatives, where required.
* Prepare court/hearing rooms, complete documentation, and support the efficient operation of the court.
* Carry out general clerical work to support HMCTS as directed.
* Work as part of a team with regular management support and manage your own time effectively.
* Work on site in an office-based role to provide HMCTS services to the public.
Working arrangements & travel
Hybrid working arrangements may be available where business needs allow, with a minimum 60% of time spent in an office, subject to local estate capacity. Some roles may not be suitable for Hybrid Working; arrangements will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate and reviewed regularly. The post is based in the UK and not overseas.
Nationally, applicants will be appointed to the nearest viable office to their home postcode and on its pay scale, with base location subject to office availability and local arrangements.
Occasional travel may be required for cover when needed.
Right to work & sponsorship
Skilled Worker visa information: From 22 July 2025 the Government increased the salary threshold and skills level for Skilled Worker visas. This role does not meet the eligibility criteria for sponsorship for first-time Skilled Worker visa applicants under the current immigration rules. If you have held a Skilled Worker visa continuously since before 22 July 2025, eligibility will be assessed during vetting checks according to transitional provisions. If you do not meet the new sponsorship criteria, consider options for maintaining your right to work in the UK.
