Are you an ambitious Town Planning professional with residential experience looking for the next step in your Planning career? This opportunity is to work on a wide range of residential-led development and strategic land projects for developers, housebuilders and institutional landowner clients. The role joins the Essex Team, based from our Cambridge Head Office (hybrid working) but covering Essex, South Suffolk, Hertfordshire, outer London and the southern home counties, with travel required within these areas. You will gain exposure to major residential schemes and developments in sectors such as education and healthcare, while supporting more senior consultants/partners and delivering professional planning advice in line with RTPI standards.
The role title may be Planner or Senior Planner depending on experience.
What you’ll be doing
* Promote land through emerging Local Plans for allocation and release from the Green Belt
* Support planning projects and manage applications through the planning system, including enquiries, site assessment, evidence compilation, and high-quality planning submissions and statements
* Represent clients’ commercial interests across all stages of the planning process (written representations, informal hearings, appeals, and public inquiries)
* Build strong relationships with clients and colleagues, responding to queries professionally and promptly
* Collaborate with internal teams including Land and Development, Rural and Building Consultancy on multi-disciplinary projects
* Maintain commercial awareness to ensure projects are delivered within budgets and timescales
* Manage financial processes including time recording, invoicing and expenses
* Keep internal systems and databases up to date, ensuring compliance with quality procedures
* Stay informed on planning legislation and policy changes to deliver expert advice
* Commit to ongoing professional development, including RTPI APC/CPD requirements and internal learning opportunities
* Support other town planning-related or administrative tasks to contribute to the success of the Planning team
Essential qualifications and experience
* Previous relevant town planning experience, within a multidisciplinary or planning-focused consultancy or local authority
* Excellent report writing skills and attention to detail
* Strong IT skills, particularly with MS Office
* Full UK driving licence
Desirable qualifications
* Degree in Planning (RTPI accredited) or working toward
* Understanding of issues affecting the economy and implications for planning consultancy
* Business and financial discipline – recording of time, expenses, turnover/income, profit and gross margins
