About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer to join Birmingham City University's Estates and Facilities team. This pivotal role will be responsible for advising the University on all aspects of electrical engineering across the estate, managing and improving electrical infrastructure, and ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant operations.
You will lead on maintenance and project delivery for electrical systems, oversee contractors, support capital projects, and contribute to the University's sustainability goals.
Key Responsibilities
As Senior Electrical Engineer you will:
Oversee the operation and maintenance of electrical systems across campus, including lighting, power distribution, fire alarms, lifts, CCTV, and emergency lighting.
Manage maintenance contracts and monitor workmanship to ensure compliance with specifications, regulations, and university standards.
Lead fault finding, diagnostic surveys, inspections, testing, and commissioning.
Produce maintenance schedules and manage budgets for repairs and upgrades.
Lead electrical design and installation for refurbishment and new-build projects.
Prepare specifications, drawings, and documentation for building services work.
Coordinate handover to Operations and Maintenance following commissioning.
Ensure compliance with statutory regulations including Health & Safety, COSHH and Building Regulations.
Maintain accurate records and documentation using CAFM systems.
Promote energy-efficient solutions and support sustainability initiatives.
Person Specification
Essential Requirements:
Degree or HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering or Building Services Engineering
Membership of IET or similar professional body (Chartered status desirable)
Extensive design experience in electrical building services from minor works to major capital projects
Experience managing a wide range of building services projects and contracts
Strong understanding of HV/LV systems, BMS, and electrical safety protocols
In-depth knowledge of lift installations
Experience with fire alarm, access control, security and CCTV systems
Proven ability to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions
Strong project management skills and experience delivering projects on time and within budget
Excellent communication, leadership and stakeholder management skills
Ability to work flexibly and collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams
Desirable:
Experience of electrical building services design in a Higher Education (HE) environment
Knowledge of UPS, CHP and generator systems
