Operations Manager

YMCA Basingstoke

£31,500 per annum

40 hours per week (5/7 days)

Job Purpose:

YMCA provides supportive homes to almost 200 young people and families in Southampton, Basingstoke and Isle of Wight. We call those that live at YMCA “member”. The Operations Manager will support the Head of Youth Support and Programmes to ensure all members experience:

13. A therapeutic approach to personal support that leads to independence
14. Access to emotional wellbeing and mental health support
15. Opportunities for employment, training and education and the skills to sustain them
16. Daily opportunities for meaningful use of leisure time that meets their interests and needs

Our approach is to support people in a trauma-informed way that contributes to members wellbeing and enables them to move into employment and independent living. We have committed at YMCA to using evidence-based approaches including Advantaged Thinking and Psychologically Informed Environments and the postholder will support all staff, volunteers and external agencies to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to apply these approaches every day. The postholder will also work closely with the housing management and estates team to ensure the quality and sustainability of supportive housing at YMCA.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

17. At all times work within the YMCA Way including ensuring implementation of trauma-informed working, psychologically informed environments and Advantaged Thinking, supported by the Head of Youth Programmes and Support.
18. Undertake day-to-day operational responsibility for YMCA Basingstoke both in the form of delegated duties and as duty manager.
19. Line manage, support and develop a team of staff and volunteers.
20. Share on-site duty management on a rota system which includes evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
21. Undertake support, planning and assessments with members.
22. Develop community-minded support and activities that involve the wider community and engage third parties to deliver support and activities to members.
23. To act as an advocate for members and to engage partner agencies and services appropriate to the member needs.
24. Enable job search, training, and volunteering opportunities with members who are not in education, employment, or training.
25. Assist with the selection and induction of those applying for accommodation.
26. Work to a rota system including evenings, weekends and bank holidays.

Person Specification & Key Competencies:

Qualifications and Experience:

27. Demonstrable experience of management in youth, adult or community-based service
28. An ability and willingness to relate positively to members, visitors and staff
29. An outgoing and friendly personality, able to communicate well and engage a wide range of people
30. Ability to react positively and effectively when faced with unwanted high-risk behaviours from members, whether targeted towards themselves, staff, visitors or others
31. Good level of IT proficiency
32. Knowledge of housing support services and processes
33. An understanding of safeguarding principles and procedures
34. An understanding of the issues facing young people
35. An understanding of equality and diversity matters

Personal Attributes:

36. A genuine enthusiasm for the work of the charity
37. An outgoing and friendly personality, able to communicate well and engage positively with a wide range of people including with young people, visitors and staff
38. The ability to motivate and inspire others
39. An ability to work under pressure and manage challenging situations
40. Good organisational skills in order to manage a highly varied and unpredictable workload
41. A creative and flexible approach to work
