Job Overview Construction Tutor – Prism Independent Special School Location: Walker Drive, Girlington, Bradford, BD8 9ES Contract Type: Full-time, Term Time Only 1 week training Reports to: Senior Leadership Team Salary Qualified Teacher: £38,545 – £41,225.59 Unqualified Teacher: £29,435.13 – £31,083.94 Role Purpose To deliver high-quality, vocationally focused construction education to pupils aged 11–19 with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and mild learning disabilities. The tutor will promote independence, confidence, and transferable skills through hands-on learning and a supportive teaching environment. Key Responsibilities Deliver engaging sessions in areas such as carpentry, bricklaying, and plumbing basics, tailored to individual pupil needs. Support pupils with their Maths and English curriculum, embedding core skills into vocational learning activities. Create and maintain a safe, inclusive, and productive workshop environment, ensuring appropriate behaviour and consistent routines. Be responsible for health and safety protocols during every session, actively always maintaining pupils’ welfare. Develop and regularly review individual behaviour plans, including risk assessments, and work with the wider staff team to implement them effectively. Promote a strong safeguarding culture; support the safeguarding needs of pupils and the school by following all procedures and attending relevant training. Foster positive relationships with pupils to encourage emotional regulation and pro-social behaviours through restorative practices. Support The Achievement Of Recognised Vocational Qualifications And Accreditations. Work closely with volunteers and work placement students, ensuring meaningful engagement, supervision, and safety. Liaise with parents, carers, and external professionals to support holistic development and transition planning. Contribute to curriculum enrichment, including themed initiatives such as Careers Week and Sustainability Week. Participate in school life, including staff meetings, CPD sessions, and training. Be flexible and willing to work evenings and weekends as required, to support enrichment activities, school events, and trips. Person Specification Essential Professional experience in the construction industry or vocational instruction. Strong classroom and behaviour management skills. Ability to build positive, trust-based relationships with pupils with SEMH needs. Commitment to safeguarding and inclusive education. Minimum of level 2 Maths and English grade c GCSE (or equivalent) Desirable A teaching qualification (QTS or equivalent). Experience in an SEMH or alternative education setting. Familiarity with vocational qualification frameworks such as BTEC or ASDAN. First Aid and Health & Safety certification.
