Summary

1. Designing and delivering lectures and seminars within the undergraduate and postgraduate law school curriculum, within an established teaching programme (under the supervision of an academic member of staff).
2. Responding to student queries, including via discussion boards and office hours.
3. Designing, marking, and moderating assessments, under the supervision of an academic member of staff.
4. Contributing to academic support, including through personal academic tutoring.
5. Enhancement of the student experience, including through engagement with extra-curricular initiatives relating to employability, client interviewing, advocacy, and involving students in BLS research.
6. Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate taught student dissertations.

Main Duties

7. Teach courses at a range of levels within specified subject area and within own area of subject specialism, to undergraduate and postgraduate taught students, predominantly through allocated lectures and seminars, so that the School’s teaching objectives are met.

8. Contribute to the design of modules with other colleagues.

9. Frequently update own subject expertise, including via keeping abreast of relevant developments in law and legal scholarship.

10. Plan and prepare own teaching, including PowerPoint slides, reading lists, guidance notes and handouts in accordance with the established objectives of the teaching programme.

11. Devise and supervise projects, student dissertations and practical work.

12. Develop an approach to planning and reviewing own teaching.

13. Undertake full range of responsibilities in relation to supervision, marking and examining.(Summative assessment, including assessed work contributing to the final award is subject to validation by the academic supervisor).

14. Undertake personal professional development in teaching, including self-reflection on own teaching, using student and peer review feedback, to enhance own teaching and learning processes.

15. Undertake some management/administration duties arising from teaching, under the supervision of an academic member of staff.

16. Contribute to Departmental/School teaching-related activities and teaching-related administration.

17. Promote equality and value diversity, acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture and learning environment.

Person Specification

18. A higher degree (usually a PhD) in the relevant subject area, or a higher degree very near to completion, or a lower level post graduate qualification plus extensive practice-based experience, including in legal education.
19. An interest in teaching in a research-intensive, academic law school.
20. A commitment to working with, and supporting, a diverse range of UG and PGT students.
21. Ability to design and deliver module materials successfully, including setting, marking and assessing work and providing feedback to students.
22. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including patience, empathy, and kindness under pressure.
23. Proficiency in using Microsoft Office and other relevant IT systems.
24. Experience of using virtual learning environments.
25. Ability to assess and organise resources effectively, including ability to prioritise and balance competing demands.
26. Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes.
27. Evidence of ability and willingness to work collaboratively with others.
28. Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day-to-day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly.
29. A teaching qualification (at the level of Associate Fellow Higher Education Academy or above and/or a commitment to securing Fellowship of Advance Higher Education) is desirable.
