A Snapshot of Your Day
As a Senior Principal Engineer within Siemens Energy’s UK Grid Technologies business, your day will be centred on leading and guiding a team of engineers to deliver high-quality primary engineering designs for UK transmission operator substations, particularly in support of renewable grid connections. You’ll balance technical leadership with collaboration—working closely with clients, project managers, civil teams, and fellow engineering leads—while overseeing progress, resolving issues, and ensuring designs meet safety, quality, budget, and programme requirements. Reporting to the Head of Primary Engineering (UK), you’ll play a visible role in technical meetings, design reviews, and monthly reporting, while also investing time in coaching and developing your team.
How You’ll Make an Impact
1. Lead and supervise a team of junior and experienced engineers to deliver primary engineering designs aligned with business strategy and internal processes.
2. Take technical accountability for primary substation designs, including approval and sign-off of engineering deliverables.
3. Ensure high-quality, consistent design outputs by chairing design reviews and coordinating closely with other principal engineers.
4. Act as a key interface with clients, project management, civil teams, and other stakeholders to meet agreed timescales and budgets.
5. Monitor engineering progress with the planner, proactively escalating risks or issues when required.
6. Ensure all design risk assessments and HAZIDs are completed, with residual risks transferred to the Health & Safety file.
7. Manage scope changes, engineering hours, and approvals in collaboration with project management throughout the project lifecycle.
8. Produce detailed monthly engineering reports covering progress, risks, resourcing, and key highlights.
9. Foster a positive, high-performing team culture by setting clear goals, coaching engineers, and supporting professional development.
What You’ll Bring
10. A degree in Electrical Engineering.
11. A minimum of 10 years’ experience in primary engineering design within the electricity transmission and distribution industry, including at least 5 years in the UK as a lead design engineer approving deliverables.
12. Strong knowledge of grid connection requirements, constraints, technologies, and client approval processes (including type registration).
13. In-depth understanding of transmission and distribution standards, HV substation design, and Health & Safety regulations, including CDM.
14. Excellent leadership, communication, and decision-making skills, with a collaborative and customer-focused mindset.
15. Proven ability to manage time, resources, budgets, and engineering programmes effectively.
16. Fluency in written and spoken English.
17. National Grid TP137 experience (desirable).
