Locally Employed Doctor / Trust Grade ST3+ General Surgery

We are offering an exciting ST3+ / Registrar-level role within our dynamic General Surgery service, with excellent exposure to Colorectal and Upper GI Surgery. The successful candidate will enjoy a varied timetable including regular clinics, high-quality theatre sessions, and a manageable 1:10 on-call rota. For those looking to expand their portfolio, endoscopy training is available, providing a fantastic opportunity to build skills and strengthen future applications for higher surgical training.


Main duties of the job

This post offers a vibrant and varied timetable, typically including 2-3 theatre sessions, 1-2 clinics, and protected research time for those keen to build their academic portfolio. While based within Colorectal and Upper GI, youll also gain hands‑on experience across General Surgery and Vascular, ensuring a broad and well‑rounded training environment.

Every 10th week youll take part in a dedicated Hot Week, delivering emergency surgical care within a structured, consultant‑supported team – an ideal opportunity to sharpen acute decision‑making skills.

The role builds on your CT1-2 foundation and provides excellent exposure to both elective and emergency GI surgery. Youll join the 1:10 on-call rota, access regular emergency lists, and contribute to the departments audit, research and publication output. All registrars rotate across teams and work within compliant, trainee‑friendly shift patterns.

Job responsibilities

* Active involvement in rostered emergency work, giving you real‑time experience in managing acute surgical presentations.
* Regular participation in consultant‑led ward rounds, with opportunities to lead and supervise junior colleagues.
* Attendance at a variety of outpatient clinics, enhancing your diagnostic and patient‑management skills.
* Operating on both elective and emergency lists, ensuring a strong and diverse operative logbook.
* Working within a prospectively covered rota, providing stability and predictable training opportunities.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
* Successful completion of MRCS.
* Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at intended start date.
* Have evidence of achievement of foundation competencies from a UKFPO‑affiliated foundation programme or equivalent, in line with GMC standards/ Good Medical Practice.
* Be eligible to work in the UK.
* Validated logbook document of surgical exposure to date.
* Applicants must have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English, adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patient and colleagues, as assessed by the General Medical Council.
* Applicants must meet professional health requirements (in line with GMC Standards / Good Medical Practice).
* Evidence of CT/ST1 competences in core surgery at the time of application and CT/ST2 competences in core surgery by time of appointment. Acceptable evidence includes satisfactory ARCP outcome of completion of the Core Surgical Training Programme or Certificate of Readiness to Enter Higher Surgical Training.
* Evidence of training in basic surgical skills.
