Overview
Trainee Level 3 Engineering Officer Cadet - Merchant Navy
As an Engineering Cadet, you will learn the skills, knowledge and behaviours over a 3-year adventure to become a fully trained Officer of the Watch with internationally recognised qualifications. James Fisher and Sons will sponsor your training journey by paying for exam and course fees, including accommodation at college, and providing a bursary of £8,500 in Year 1, increasing to £10,500 in Years 2 and 3.
Engineer Cadet Officers oversee operating and maintaining the ship's engine room and its equipment, including the main engine, boilers, pumps, fuel systems, electrical generating and distribution equipment, refrigeration and air conditioning plants, lifts, cranes, and other mechanical and electrical systems.
As part of your studies, the training programme will typically last for approximately 3 years. Your Cadetship is structured in phases, each lasting up to 6 months.
Cadet training is primarily based at Fleetwood Nautical College during Phases 1, 3 and 5. If you do not live near the college, accommodation and meals will be provided in college accommodation, and travel to and from college is covered at the start and end of term. Here is the college website: fleetwoodnautical.blackpool.ac.uk.
Phases 2 and 4 are spent at sea onboard our tankers. Each sea phase lasts about 2 months with a designated mentor onboard, and full PPE provided. Our fleet trades along the UK and Northern European coastline, with some voyages to the Caribbean. Travel to and from vessels and meals during sea phases are fully paid. See the fleet list at james-fisher.com/group-companies/james-fisher-everard/fleet-list.
What qualifications will I get?
All cadets will graduate with an Officer of the Watch Certificate of Competency (II1/1 EOOW), enabling you to work on any vessel as a qualified Engineering Officer. Training on an oil and chemical tanker provides a specialised qualification for future tanker work without further training.
You will work towards and achieve a Level 3 Advanced Diploma in Marine Engineering with Fleetwood College as part of the Cadetship programme.
