Developing Band 5-6 – 37.5 hours

There are 2 posts for providing a service to children and young people with a wide range of speech, language and communication needs.

One post is within the Preschool Team, working across both our Community and Early interaction Team (complex needs) and is provided primarily in clinical settings and nurseries.

One post is within the School Age Team where children are seen primarily in their educational settings.

The post holder will be required to:

1. assess and diagnose children with a wide range of speech, language and communication needs
2. provide therapy in the form of direct individual therapy, groups, parent workshops, and therapy programmes to be implemented by parents/carers and educational setting staff
3. liaise with parents and other professionals
4. contribute to the delivery of training for parents, school staff and other colleagues
5. collect data
6. contribute to team audits and to the development of policies/procedures
7. The post holder will be a member of RCSLT and HCPC registered

Main duties of the job

8. To provide an effective and efficient speech and language therapy
service to children with communication and/or swallowing difficulties.
9. Under the guidance of a more senior therapist, the post holder will be responsible for a paediatric caseload in a variety of settings
10. Duties will include assessment, diagnosis, therapy (both group and/or
individual, as appropriate), planning therapy programmes and discharge of clients

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

15. Responsible for initial patient assessment including:
Collection of detailed case history information
Informal assessment and observation
Formal standardised assessment procedures with the potential for diagnosis and further assessment, leading to:
- An individual programme of care
- Referral to other services as appropriate
- Communication of assessment and therapeutic findings within the
multidisciplinary team, as appropriate
- Responsibility of decisions leading to review or discharge of clients
16. Undertake clinical work with individuals and groups of clients. Develop coordinated multidisciplinary programmes of care/care packages. May work independently or with other SLT colleagues, or as part of a multidisciplinary team. Provide advice, strategies and programmes, as appropriate to the wider workforce, including parents.
17. Manages a caseload with support as determined by department policy, independently seeking support from other specialist colleagues
18. Establish and maintain liaison with parents/carers and other professionals, both within own department and with other services/departments for the comprehensive management
of clients. Includes attendance and participation at case conferences
19. In all situations, will communicate complex and sensitive information to clients/parents where there will often be significant barriers to understanding. Communication will include both verbal and non-verbal methods
20. Direct and supervise assistants and volunteers in individual and group treatment programmes, according to department policy
21. Demonstrate progression of clear therapeutic aims as appropriate to clinical setting, with the use of established team outcome measures
22. To collect statistical data and be involved in the use of audit and outcomes to measure and improve quality of care.
23. Contribute to development of procedures, policies and standards for service delivery and service delivery plans
24. Maintain and provide accurate and timely documentation e.g. patient records and reports, sharing with others as appropriate, observing data protection guidelines
25. To record contact electronically within 24 hours of contact
26. Follow best practice SLT standards in accordance with national, regional and professional standards
27. Meet the required level of continuing professional development as stated by RCSLT and required by the Trust. Actively participate in receiving:
Individual personal development programme/appraisal
Peer review
Reflective practice
Clinical supervision
Independently identifies own development needs and discusses with Line Manager should formal training be required
28. Responsible for ensuring that own practice is safe and appropriate in
accordance with RCSLT and HCPC
29. Provide prospective SLT undergraduates and other professionals the
opportunity to observe the work of a SLT. To contribute to the supervision of students
30. Deliver training to other agency personnel, parents/carers, individually and/or in groups on specific SLT related knowledge and skills
31. Attend and provide input at SLT service meetings, multidisciplinary meetings within Health and external multiagency meetings
32. Observes personal duty of care in relation to equipment and resources in course of work and highlights the need for ordering further equipment as required
33. Ensure good time keeping and planning, to execute the role effectively
34. Recognising when support from other specialist colleagues is required, for example when help required in interpreting and analysing assessment results in more complex cases.
35. To refer matters that may impact on service delivery to Line Manager or other authority before taking action
36. To undertake any other duties of a similar nature consistent with the
responsibilities of this post in order to provide a quality Speech and Language Therapy service

Essential

Essential criteria

37. Speech and Language Therapy degree
38. HCPC registered
39. Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar- minimal errors on application

Desirable criteria

40. Experience working with children
41. Knowledge of the pressures of working within a busy NHS service
42. Relevant training courses
