The Transport Manager is required to lead and manage the day-to-day operations of our home delivery network across the North of England. The role will be responsible for ensuring the efficient, safe and cost-effective management of transport activities, maintaining high service quality, and driving continuous improvements across the network. This is a key leadership role requiring strong operational expertise, people management skills, and a good understanding of home delivery logistics.
Duties and Responsibilities
* Operational Management
o Lead and manage daily transport operations for the North of England and Scotland.
o Oversee scheduling, route planning, fleet utilisation, and subcontractor performance.
o Ensure on-time delivery, service quality, and compliance with KPIs and SLAs.
* People & Performance Leadership
o Manage, coach, and develop transport team members and regional transport leads.
o Ensure all drivers, subcontractors, and logistics partners operate to the highest standards.
o Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
* Compliance & Safety
o Ensure full compliance with UK and EU road transport legislation, including driver hours, vehicle safety, and environmental standards.
o Maintain and enforce health & safety policies, ensuring risk assessments and incident investigations are completed.
o CPC responsibility to ensure full compliance in line with statutory requirement.
o Defect management of vehicles and fleet in general ensuring defects are closed and standard processes are in place across all sites.
* Cost & Efficiency Management
o Accountability forachieving transport budgets, optimising costs, and delivering productivity improvements.
o Identify and implement efficiency gains in fleet management, routing, and subcontractor partnerships.
o Support sustainability goals, including CO₂ reduction initiatives.
* Stakeholder Engagement
o Act as the key point of contact for internal stakeholders (customer service, planning, warehouse, senior management).
o Manage relationships with third-party carriers and delivery partners.
o Analyse transport performance and deliver data-driven improvements.
o Lead or support transport-related projects, such as new technology implementation, route optimisation tools, and process automation.
o Drive best practice sharing across the network.
Qualifications & Experience
* Proven experience in transport / logistics management, ideally within home delivery.
* Strong knowledge of UK road transport regulations, compliance, and health & safety standards.
* Demonstrated ability to manage transport budgets and deliver cost savings.
* Excellent leadership and people management skills, with experience managing both direct teams and third-party providers.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with experience in transport planning systems (e.g., TMS, route optimisation tools).
