Industrial Placement – Civil Engineer – Infrastructure (Manchester or Leeds)
From helping shape entire cities to adapting infrastructure to deal with the climate emergency, a career at Buro Happold presents the chance to make a difference. This is an exciting 12‑month placement with our Infrastructure team in Manchester or Leeds.
Applicants should select their preferred office in the application form. The role requires in‑person attendance at least two days per week (more during the first months to integrate with the team).
What you’ll work on
The Infrastructure team tackles a diverse portfolio of projects across the UK and worldwide. Some of the areas you’ll support include:
* Regeneration – engineering solutions for major redevelopment sites such as Battersea Power Station, integrating new tube stations and transport links.
* Public Realm – collaborating with landscape architects to create high‑quality public spaces, for example Mayfield in Manchester.
* Stadiums and Arenas – infrastructure design for flagship sports venues including Everton’s stadium and the Co‑Op arena in Manchester.
* Healthcare – master‑planning and research for hospitals like the Hamad Medical Corporation in Qatar and the Guy’s and St Thomas’ Trust in London.
Qualifications
* Currently studying towards a Civil Engineering degree and have a formal year out included in your course (or the option to take one).
* A passion for engineering design, sustainability and making a meaningful contribution to society.
* Interest in the variety of infrastructure projects and a desire to understand how your work fits into larger schemes.
* Willingness to collaborate, learn from colleagues and share knowledge.

Applications are considered on a rolling basis. Successful applicants progress to interview within 2–3 months of the closing date. This paid role is for current students, with start dates in August/September 2026. The annual salary aligns with the UK Real Living Wage.
