Consultant Gastroenterologist, DMH
County Durham & Darlington NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a dynamic and motivated Consultant Gastroenterologist to join our friendly and enthusiastic gastroenterology team. The role offers the opportunity to work within a high quality service which aims to expand its subspecialty interests in IBD and Liver disease, while also welcoming candidates with interest in any gastroenterology or hepatology subspecialty.
The successful appointee will join our existing team of 13 consultants (plus 2 Consultant Endoscopists) to provide inpatient and outpatient Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Endoscopy, and Clinical Nutrition services across the Trust, including University Hospital of North Durham, Bishop Auckland Hospital and Darlington Memorial Hospital.
The post-holder will participate in the consultant of the week on-call rota, including out‑of‑hours GI bleed on‑call or G(I)M on‑call duties.
Main Duties of the Job
The basic contract is for 10 programmed activities (PAs), covering elective outpatient work, endoscopy, and inpatient care. There is a 1:5 Gastroenterology ward commitment to cover inpatient activity during ward periods, at which time all elective commitments are cancelled. The job plan is indicative and negotiable to accommodate the candidate’s aspirations, special interests, or part‑time working arrangements. There is no requirement to do G(I)M, but the position includes GI bleed on calls.
Responsibilities
The postholder will be based at their nominal site with a commitment to inpatient and outpatient services as agreed in their timetable and job plan.
* Provide clinical care and maintain and develop gastroenterology services and specialist skills in line with departmental needs.
* Ensure continuity of care by covering for colleagues in absence and supervising junior staff.
* Accountable for professional and basic educational supervision of trainees in a clinical/education supervisory role.
* Participate in postgraduate teaching and training of medical and nursing staff attached to the Trust.
* Encourage research activities and pursue limited research funding through local research and development committees.
* Meet national CPD requirements, attend educational events, and participate in clinical audit.
* Engage in clinical governance, including audit, risk management, and patient safety initiatives.
* Undertake annual appraisal and contribute to the Trust’s 7‑day speciality service.
* Represent the Trust in health authority or external agency services as agreed.

Special Requirements
* Previous active involvement in audit.
* Demonstrated NHS management skills and ability to organise and prioritise own work.
* Ability to delegate appropriately to trainee/non‑consultant.
* Experience leading and working effectively as part of a team.
* Experience in teaching undergraduate, junior doctors and nurses; strong commitment to education.
* Excellent communication, empathy, and interpersonal skills.
* Willingness to undertake additional professional duties and pursue CPD.
* Integrity, honesty, and awareness of confidentiality and ethical issues.
* Commitment to non‑prejudicial, inclusive practice and responsiveness to feedback.

Experience
* Experience in Gastroenterology, Endoscopy, and G(I)M.
* Proficiency in gastroscopy and colonoscopy.
* Experience supervising, training and teaching trainees.
* Evidence of career planning through appraisal process and up‑to‑date professional development.
* Experience of close liaison with community services and service development.
* Research experience and clinical effectiveness work.
Statutory Registration
* Full and specialist registration with GMC (and licence to Practice).
* Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or within 6 months of attaining CCT in specialty at interview time.

Qualifications
* Teaching qualification or MD/PhD as applicable.

Salary and Benefits
£113,565 to £150,569 per year (pro rata); includes CPD funding of £1,100 per year for up to 10 days study leave, potentially rolled over to a maximum of 30 days over three years.
