Job overview

We are looking for a highly self-motivated and enthusiastic Senior Pharmacist to join our team at Watford General Hospital.

The successful candidate will have experience in clinical haemato-oncology as well as technical services.

They will be able to work independently, demonstrate initiative, and be eager to become a key member of the team—bringing fresh ideas and contributing to service improvement.

The post holder will possess leadership skills, a commitment to delivering high-quality patient care, and a proactive approach to supporting service development.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will support the Pharmacy Technical/Cancer Services Manager in leading and developing high-quality Pharmacy Technical and Cancer Services across the Trust.

They will provide pharmaceutical advice, ensure compliance with relevant legislation and standards (including GCP, GMP, and NHSQA), and contribute to the efficient, safe, and cost-effective use of medicines.

Responsibilities include supporting daily manufacturing operations, maintaining the Pharmaceutical Quality System, providing clinical advice to cancer patients and healthcare staff, and contributing to audits and research.

The role also involves professional and legal supervision within the Pharmacy Technical / Cancer Services Department, ensuring the health and safety of both staff and patients.

The post holder must be a registered pharmacist and either hold or be working towards a Diploma in Pharmacy Practice or equivalent.

Person specification


Education and qualifications:

* Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
* Certificate in Pharmacy Practice (or equivalent).
* MSc/Diploma in Pharmacy Practice (or equivalent).
* Post graduate training in the Preparative/Production services.


Knowledge:

* Technical and practical knowledge of GMP.
* Prescription Monitoring.
* Computer and IT Literate.
* Knowledge of economics of healthcare.
* Understanding the role of the MHRA.
* Understanding of licensing regulations and their application to hospital.
* Understanding of clinical trials.
* Legislation governing Clinical Trials.
* Up to date knowledge of national pharmacy issues.
* NHS organisational structure.
* Health and Safety.
* Critical appraisal skills.
* Preparation of written reports and procedures.
* Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of safe pharmacy practice including Medicines legislation and professional code of ethics.
* Demonstrates the ability to lead and work within a multi-disciplinary team.
* Demonstrates an understanding of the needs of patients with relation to the provision of information on safe effective medicines use.
* An understanding of clinical governance and the role of the pharmacist in the clinical governance agenda.
* Well-developed therapeutic and clinical pharmacy knowledge in appropriate areas.
* Demonstrates an understanding of quality risk management.
* Knowledge of clinical oncology or haematology.


Experience:

* Post registration experience as a hospital pharmacist providing a pharmacy service to oncology and haematology patients.
* Experience within a range of technical specialties.
* Experience in providing clinical services to cancer patients.
* Clinical Trials/GCP.
* Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
* Evidence of clinical audit, practice research, implementation of procedures and protocols.
* Experience in utilising information technology within the workplace including inputting, retrieving information and producing reports.
* Experience of ChemoCare or other chemotherapy electronic prescribing system.
* Experience in technical pharmacy production in pharmaceutical industry or hospital setting.
* Experience of successfully leading and implementing service improvement and change projects.
* Training Pre-registration Pharmacists and Junior Staff.
