St Bartholomew's Hospital (Barts) are searching for an experienced and passionate Band 2 Medical Lab Assistant to join their highly skilled Pathology team.

We operate from four major hospital sites (The Royal London, St Bartholomew’s, Whipps Cross and Newham) and a number of community locations, including Mile End hospital. Around 2.5 million people living in east London look to our services to provide them with the healthcare they need.
Job Purpose
The post holder is responsible for delivering an effective, safe, high quality 24/7 service.
The post holder would be expected to participate in a rotational shift pattern in the department to undertake routine data entry and preparation of specimens for laboratory processing. Core duties involve receipting of specimens and entering data into the laboratory information systems, basic preparation of specimens where appropriate, and placing them into racks on automated tracks or taking them to laboratory areas for processing.
The post holder will be expected to offer a professional and helpful service to visitors to the laboratory, and to deal with telephone enquiries. Full in house training and written standard operating procedures will be provided.
Main Duties And Responsibilities
* Receive, sort and number all incoming samples and request forms.
* Enter details from each specimen and request form into laboratory information systems.
* Pre-analytical preparation of specimens. This includes sorting, labelling, centrifugation, separating of and aliquoting of serum, and loading racks of specimens onto automated track systems in line with laboratory protocols.
* Maintain a clean and tidy work station, fridges, freezers, and store rooms / areas.
* Deal with minor spillages of specimens in line with laboratory policies.
* Record fridge and freezer temperatures daily as directed, in Reception areas. Defrost fridges and freezers as required.
* Ensure safe collection and disposal of waste within allocated working area.
* Attend to visitors to the department in a professional manner, such as patients, staff, couriers and other visitors and deal with telephone calls and queries as directed.
* Sort, log and dispatch samples to other hospitals as directed.
* Collect samples from other Pathology departments or other areas of the hospital as directed.
* Receive and distribute supplies and goods.
* The post holder should comply with and ensure they are familiar with Local Health & Safety Rules, Standard Operating procedures and Local and Trust Policies.
* The post holder should comply with local Quality Policies and ensure they are familiar with the departmental quality manual.
* Assist in the training of new staff as appropriate.
* Participate in the departmental annual appraisal.
* Ensure that all statutory and mandatory training is kept up to date.
Requirements
GCSE passes in English and Maths or equivalent
Able to follow and learn instructions and standard operating procedures Methodical and organised Manual dexterity
Good literacy and numeracy
Able to undertake VDU work
Good keyboard skills
Ability to work on own initiative Polite, helpful and confident manner
Previous experience in answering and dealing with telephone enquiries
Able to undertake ‘housekeeping duties’
Able to perform required duties with any appropriate aids or adaptations
