Job Overview: Senior Paediatric Audiologist / Clinical Scientist (Band 7)

Are you an experienced Paediatric Audiologist ready to take the next step in your career? We are looking for a passionate and skilled professional to join our dedicated Paediatric Audiology Team within Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust. This is a fixed-term position to cover an internal staff secondment, with the contract ending on 31st March 2026.

As a Senior Paediatric Audiologist, you will deliver high-quality assessments and rehabilitation services to children with hearing needs, including advanced diagnostic procedures such as ABR. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to our complex assessment service at Chailey Clinical Services, lead on service development, and supervise junior staff. The post holder will be based at Crawley Hospital within the Paediatric Audiology Team and will liaise with a multidisciplinary wider team.

Main duties of the job

a) The post holder will be expected to deliver excellent clinical assessment and diagnostic work through skilled performance of a broad range of clinical activities. These will be across Paediatric Audiology (Assessment/Complex Assessment, Rehabilitation and Objective test measures including ABR assessment).

b) The post holder will have the opportunity to develop a role in our complex assessment service at Chailey Clinical Services.

c) The post holder will be expected to deliver excellent clinical rehabilitation and utilise all validation and verification methods suited to the patient.

d) The post holder can expect to perform autonomously and undertake supervision of junior staff across all areas of Paediatric Audiology.

e) The post holder will be expected to deputise the Professional Lead alongside the other Senior Paediatric Audiologists in the team.

f) The post holder will be expected to take a leading role in service development and clinical audit. Holding overall responsibility for maintaining regular audit in their clinical area of leadership.

g) The post holder will be expected to lead an agreed area of Paediatric Audiology and take responsibility for the Quality of that area.

h) The post holder will be supported to provide clinical and operational leadership and ensure the service continues to meet its UKAS IQIPS accreditation requirements.

Job description Job responsibilities

To provide day to day management of team members to include:

a) A clear understanding of national Audiological Standards and Departmental Service Operational Procedures required to competently lead clinical practice and patient management.

b) To perform unsupervised all standard and advanced scientific and technical diagnostic duties in all sections of the Paediatric Audiology service.

c) Take detailed medical and audiological history, interpret test results and explain these to the patients, relatives and carers in an appropriate, empathetic manner.

d) Produce detailed and clear reports suitable for the audience receiving them.

e) Develop and provide an individual patient management plan for the child and deliver it in a way that is suitable for the child and the family.

f) Perform outcome and verification measures by using best practice and quantifiable questionnaires.

g) Participate in clinical audit and any on-going research.

h) Take responsibility of Team Leader for a specific agreed area of audiology and liaise with the Professional Lead with regards to service development via monthly senior team meetings.

i) Work with the team and manager to maintain the departments UKAS IQIPS accreditation.

j) Recognise the importance of clinical governance, timely incident reporting via Datix and triaging of new referrals into the service as part of the team.

Main tasks

a) Leading and jointly managing all Paediatric patient appointment types working closely with the whole Paediatric Audiology team.

b) Clinic variety will depend on the post holders expertise but they will be expected to lead in all behavioural assessment procedures, objective assessment procedures and rehabilitation procedures.

c) Timely writing of all reports both self-typed and dictated.

d) Regular participation in team meetings and wider trust meetings as required.

e) Consistent adherence to trust appraisal and supervision guidance as both the appraiser and appraisee.

f) Clear recording and participation in CPD in-line with their own registration body.

g) Showing clear communication techniques both verbally and written to patients their families, other professionals and stakeholders.
