Job Overview
This is an exciting opportunity for a suitably qualified BMS for the role of Expert Scientist Dissector. The post holder will be a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist, with extensive experience in Cellular Pathology with a membership or Fellowship with the IBMS. The post holder will have completed or be working towards the IBMS Diploma of Expert Practice in Histological Dissection.

The role of an Expert Scientist dissector will predominantly be based within cutup, supporting the service, along side our Consultant Histopathologists and Specialist Trainees. Completing dissection of a range of Histopathology sub-specialties and achieving/maintaining competency in the dissection of category A, B and C specimens.

The post holder will develop agreed protocols and policies and co-ordinate their implementation in the specimen reception and dissection area.

They will play a key role in service development for the dissection area, striving for and maintaining best practise. In liaison with the senior BMS team, the post holder will ensure a timely workflow and assist in maintaining high scientific and technical standards.

They will also be active in the training of BMS team members learning dissection both at in-house level and DEP level.

To qualify for this role candidates must hold the DEP in dissection. However, candidates will also be considered if they are currently working towards this qualification.

Main duties of the job

* Overseeing the day to day workload and flow within dissection
* Achieve and maintain competency in the dissection of category A-C specimens.
* Completing daily dissection workload.
* Train and develop the competence of BMSs in handling and dissection of histological specimens categories A-C.
* Quality responsibility within dissection:- Writing and reviewing SOPs, RAs, carrying out audit and undertaking CAPA and DATIX where necessary

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
BMS- Expert Scientist Dissector in Cellular Pathology

Taking a leading role within the dissection section to oversee and maintain a high quality service in liaison with the current senior BMS team and the Chief BMS.

Main duties include:-

* Dissection of specimens categories A-C
* Training of BMS staff in dissection for the DEP or in-house protocols
* Continue to develop the range of specimen within dissection repertoire
* Responsible for opening specimens ready for dissection by Pathologists
* Deal with and resolve issues within the dissection area in liaison with with the Chief BMS
* Play an active role in the quality processes associated with dissections including but not limited to audit, SOP design and review, CAPA and DATIX
* Adopting a flexible approach to achieving service needs within the core hours of 8am to 5.30pm
* Participation in all laboratory process as an when required.
* Participation in senior BMS duties along slide the current senior team.

Person specification

Qualifications
Essential criteria

* HCPC accredited Biomedical Science degree
* HCPC registration
* DEP in Histological Dissection

Desirable criteria

* Leader and Management Qualification

Knowledge

Essential criteria

* Microtomy, Embedding... etc
* Experience of training and/or mentoring
* Dissection of specimens category A-C

Desirable criteria

* Computer Literacy
* Good understanding of the Q-Pulse Quality platform
