Clinical Fellow in General Surgery
General Surgical Wards. At least at the level of a Registrar doctor (SHO). Contribute to day‑to‑day running of wards, participate in emergency on‑call rota, professional development through integrated surgical and local specialty teaching, core surgical training and grand rounds, and undertake audits and quality improvement projects. Develop interests in General Surgery and support other specialties.
Responsibilities
* Conduct daily ward rounds with the medical team, review patients and formulate appropriate clinical plans.
* Be part of the seven‑day working model and emergency on‑call rota.
* Ensure continuity of a high standard of care: assess patients, order diagnostic tests, make and receive referrals, discharge patients within protocols.
* Provide advice and support to patients, families and other healthcare professionals.
* Accept responsibility for own caseload, ensuring an accurate plan of care is recorded and documentation is clear.
* Be actively involved in inpatient care, liaising with ward staff and members of the clinical team.
* Assess patients in the surgical pre‑assessment clinic, arrange investigations including radiological imaging.
* Review patients for discharge and prepare documentation for the family practitioner.
* Carry out procedures such as venepuncture, intravenous cannulation, blood gas sampling and ECG.
* Work with the supervising surgeon(s) to ensure appropriate medications are prescribed.
Qualifications and Experience
* Professional registration.
* Minimum 2 years of experience.
* Previous surgical experience.
* Previous NHS experience.
