Advert EDUCATION, COMMUNITIES AND HOUSING UHI Orkney Operations Manager – Facilities (Institute of Archaeology) 17.5 hours per week Temporary to 30th July 2027 £44,686 - £47,368 pro rata / £24.49 - £25.96 per hour (including Distant Islands Allowance) The University of the Highlands and Islands Institute of Archaeology is seeking to recruit a suitably qualified candidate as Operations Manager for its AEONS facility and laboratories located at UHI Orkney. The Archaeology and Environment Science (AEONS) Facility is an AHRC RICHeS-funded project that will establish a world-class centre for environmental archaeology at UHI Orkney. The facility will include specialist environmental archaeology and geoarchaeology laboratories for archaeobotany, palynology, zooarchaeology, malacology, histology and imaging of biological materials, ancient and modern soils and sediments. The AEONS project is co-led with Historic Environment Scotland (HES), in partnership with Orkney Museums, UHI Agronomy Institute, Glasgow University, Archaeology Scotland, the SCAPE Trust and the University of Southampton. The AEONS Facility operational manager will be responsible for the management of commercial, research and training activities and for the overall planning, control, co-ordination and safe implementation of contracts and programmes, in order that they are completed within quality, budgetary and timing considerations. They will also be responsible for the logistics of the Facility, including managing and developing external relationships which contribute to the promotion and greater profitability of research and commercial activities, managing laboratories, and community and educational aspects of the Facility. You will be a specialist in environmental archaeology or closely related relevant specialisms with experience of project management in a research and/or development-led context and proven ability in grant or commercial bidding, report/article writing and budgetary management. Applicants must hold a qualification at SCQF 8/9 i.e., SVQ4, HND, General Degree, Higher Apprenticeship or Technical Apprenticeship in Archaeology or equivalent, or have a minimum of 5 years previous relevant experience. A postgraduate qualification in environmental archaeology or closely related relevant specialism is desirable. You should hold a full, current driving licence (please note the Council is committed to making reasonable adjustments so if you are unable to drive due to a disability your application will still be able to be considered).
