Purpose of the Role
To provide independent oversight of children’s care and protection plans, ensuring statutory compliance, safeguarding, and positive outcomes for children and young people. The IRO/CP Chair ensures that child protection and looked-after children plans are reviewed effectively, that children’s voices are central to decision-making, and that statutory responsibilities are met.
Key Responsibilities
* Chair statutory Looked After Children (LAC) reviews in line with the Children Act 1989 and 2004.
* Monitor the implementation of care plans, permanency arrangements, and support services.
* Ensure the voices and views of children and young people are central to decision-making.
* Identify delays, gaps, or risks in service delivery and elevate concerns appropriately.
* Maintain accurate records of reviews, decisions, and recommendations.
* Chair Child Protection Conferences (CPCs) in line with Working Together guidance.
* Ensure child protection plans are clear, actionable, and implemented by relevant agencies.
* Collaborate with social workers, families, professionals, and foster carers to review progress against child protection objectives.
* Identify safeguarding concerns, risks, or emerging patterns in children’s care and protection.
* Liaise with schools, health professionals, voluntary organisations, and other agencies to support children’s welfare.
