Trainee Reporting Radiographer and X‑Ray Lead

Closing date: 04 May 2026

We are looking for a dynamic, knowledgeable radiographer with a strong passion for plain film imaging. This is a dual‑focused role, combining service leadership with professional development. The successful candidate will take the lead in delivering and developing our plain film X‑ray service, based at Alexandra Hospital in Redditch. Alongside this, the role offers an exciting opportunity to train as a reporting radiographer, enabling the post holder to expand their expertise in plain film interpretation while supporting and enhancing the capabilities of the existing reporting team.

We have a team of 13 reporting radiographers, led by a Consultant Radiographer. The team currently manages over 75 % of the plain film reporting, including running a daily hot reporting service to the two Emergency Departments and four Minor Injury Units. Our Consultant Radiographer is an international lecturer in plain film reporting and a regular visiting lecturer at several universities. Reporting radiographers in the trust are supported with ongoing training and an expanding scope of practice, and we expect reporters to work towards qualification in reporting all body parts. We want to develop advanced practice within the department and therefore expect the post holder to participate in teaching and audit.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will be based at Alexandra Hospital, but will be required to travel around the trust offering teaching and support when necessary.

Prior to commencing the reporting qualification, and throughout the training period, a flexible approach will be adopted to support study, mentoring, and shadowing opportunities with the existing reporting team.

On completion of their reporting qualification, if working full time, the post holder will be allocated a minimum of five dedicated reporting sessions per week.

The service is progressing towards a seven‑day reporting model, and opportunities for home reporting are available. A flexible approach is supported to enable reporting commitments to be met across the seven‑day service.

The successful candidate will be required to support the service in both a clinical and managerial capacity and will be required to support our out‑of‑hours duties as part of the Radiology department’s key service provision.

There is an expectation that the appointed candidate will support other services within Radiology (according to knowledge and skills) and, as a senior staff member, will be required to support the leadership team as and when required.

Job responsibilities

As a band 7 radiographer at Worcestershire Acute Hospital Trust, there is an expectation that you will use your experience and knowledge to support both the staff and service users where appropriate. This also includes any modality leads, site leads and senior managers.

As such you will be expected to:

* Maintain clinical skills and service provision within designated specialities.
* Support the department in delivering continuous high‑quality clinical care.
* Demonstrate a high level of expertise within relevant modalities/areas, providing training, advice, education and support to staff.
* Be responsible for ensuring the effective management and leadership of required services, which includes organising workload, staffing and appropriate stock control.
* Ensure operational standards are met to maintain effective and progressive service delivery.
* Demonstrate effective communication with all staff, including site/modality leads.
* Ensure, in line with site leads, staffing levels are managed appropriately, maintaining a safe, efficient and responsive service within your specific area.
* Support and, where appropriate, lead the ongoing development of clinical practice and standards of care within a specific service, including the development of policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines in collaboration with multidisciplinary colleagues.
* Contribute towards service development and undertake clinical audit activity within specialist services as required.
* Where appropriate, support the delivery of complex imaging techniques using advanced technologies, recording or reporting on the outcomes.
* Act as a specialist resource and provide specialist advice in relation to the care of patients within your appropriate speciality(ies).
