Job Summary
As we move forward with our strategy and develop our services, we are recruiting for Band 3 Palliative Care Support Workers to join the Inpatient Unit (IPU) Team. If you are a dedicated and proactive Health Care Assistant/ Support Worker with an interest in working in End‑of‑Life Care we would like to hear from you. Joining the Hospice in this role will involve providing specialist palliative care for our patients and support for their families. You will also work closely with the registered nurses and the wider multi‑disciplinary team to ensure a holistic approach to care.
Main Duties of the Job
* Provide direct nursing care to patients on the inpatient unit.
* Participate in and deliver care for patients requiring symptom control, terminal care, psychological, social, and spiritual care.
* Work a variety of shift patterns and lengths of shift dependent on patient requirement.
* Clearly document all care given.
* Work collaboratively with the MDT.

Job Responsibilities
* Support and work closely with registered nurses to deliver a high standard of care to patients, families, and carers.
* Act as an active member of the multi‑professional team.
* Maintain a compassionate and professional attitude.
* Contribute to the high‑quality safe care given on the inpatient unit and St Peters Hospice.
* Participate in the training of other healthcare assistants and members of the team.
* Understand own level of responsibility and accountability in relation to registered staff.
* Communicate effectively with the multidisciplinary team, patients, families, visitors, and carers.
* Assist and provide personal care to patients.
* Undertake a range of specific clinical skills for patients that demonstrate an enhanced level of competency.
* Complete documentation of care in line with SPH Documentation standards using both paper and electronic systems.
* Function at a competency level in line with the post requirements and achieve mandatory and statutory training.
* Maintain effective communication with patients, carers, and families in a sensitive, supportive, and caring manner.
* Participate in discussions about patient care at handover and unit meetings.
* Respond to incidents, concerns, and complaints, escalating appropriately.
* Mentor new PCSWs and support staff on placement.
* Maintain physical and mental health to be fit and resilient for the role.
* Prioritise and organise workload and that of others.
* Undertake clerical work as required.
* Provide care that meets health and wellbeing needs, safeguard patients and the public.
* Respond swiftly to patients in pain or distress, reporting to a registered nurse.
* Undertake infection control screening as requested.
* Perform patient transfer/escort duties between clinical areas, completing all relevant documentation.
* Maintain competence in use of relevant equipment.
* Perform minor dressings as specified in a patient’s care plan.
* Assist patients with mobilisation, repositioning, independence, feeding, and hydration.
* Comply with SPH policies, health and safety, and cross‑infection prevention.
* Keep the environment clean and tidy.
* Report incidents and accidents via the SPH reporting system.
* Prepare patient rooms and orientate patients and families.
* Contribute to service improvement, audit, and research.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
* Minimum of NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care or relevant health‑care experience.
Desirable Qualifications
* Care certificate.
Essential Experience
* Previous relevant health‑care experience.
* Recent experience in the community or hospital setting.
* Basic IT experience.
* Willingness to develop palliative care knowledge and clinical skills that would benefit patient care.
* Good numeracy and literacy skills.
Desirable Experience
* Palliative care experience.
* Knowledge of the role in relation to palliative care.
Essential Additional Criteria
* Excellent communication skills (verbal and non‑verbal).
* Ability to maintain competence in a range of clinical skills following training.
* Ability to participate in MDT discussions.
* Ability to mentor members of the team.
* Ability to contribute to relevant teaching and link roles within IPU.
* An understanding and empathy for the work of the Hospice.
* Able to work as part of a team and independently.
