Course Summary

As modern cars become ever more complex, the modern automotive technician needs a wide range of skills to be able to maintain and repair them. This one year course is an ideal starting point if you wish to pursue a career in vehicle maintenance and repair. As well as covering the technology involved in the engine, transmission and chassis of the motor vehicle, you will put the theory you learn into practice in our Automotive Engineering workshop.

It is a learning programme which involves students studying both the theory and practical aspects of the following:

• Carrying out basic routine maintenance.
• Operating principles of light vehicle engines, tyres, brakes, steering and suspension systems
• Introduction to vehicle electrical and electronic systems- How to carry out basic checks
• Component knowledge and maintenance of light vehicle transmission systems

Health and safety is of paramount importance in all areas of the automotive industry, and this will be reinforced throughout the course.

Whilst at the college you will be encouraged to take part in competitions, participate in the college enrichment programmes and develop your entrepreneurial skills through charitable and community projects which run throughout the year and are led by students.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Learning takes place through a variety of theory and practical lessons. Students will also need to carry out personal research to enable them to successfully complete the course, and guidance on this will be given by the course tutors.

Your skills and knowledge will be continually assessed throughout the course through formal multiple choice examinations, and practical tests.

Support will be provided through regular meetings with your course tutor.

Entry requirements

2 GCSEs at grade 2 or better, in Maths and English, general education and a keen interest in your chosen subject area. In addition to the entry qualifications listed, the offer of a place on the course is subject to the outcomes of initial assessment, which will be taken at the College as part of the admissions process. Please note that entry criteria may vary quite significantly between courses at the same level. This is to take account of the specific skills needed for success on particular courses, the length of the course and the requirements for progression to the next level. Entry criteria are given as a guide, and the exact requirements in order to obtain a place on a particular course will be confirmed following attendance at a Welcome Event/Interview.

Your next steps...

Successful completion of all elements of this study programme will allow you to progress in several different ways, including;

• Further full time training at level 2 within further education.
• Gaining employment within the Automotive industry and undertaking an apprenticeship scheme to gain further qualifications and experience.
• Your basic knowledge would be useful in gaining employment in the automotive industry in a number of roles such as parts, sales or service reception.
