In the Middle East & North Africa, bp operates or has activities in six countries: Iraq, UAE, Oman, Kuwait, Egypt, and Libya. bp has a rich history in Iraq, including the discovery of the Kirkuk oilfield in 1927 and the Rumaila oilfield in 1953. Rumaila is a supergiant oilfield in southern Iraq and bp participates in Rumaila as a partner in Basra Energy Company Ltd. More recently, in March 2025, bp and Iraq signed an agreement for rehabilitation and redevelopment of five producing fields in Kirkuk, in the north.
The Kirkuk contract covers rehabilitation and redevelopment of oil and gas production from the Baba and Avanah domes of the Kirkuk field, as well as three adjacent fields: Bai Hassan, Jambur, and Khabbaz, currently operated by the North Oil Company (NOC) of the Ministry of Oil.
With two assets of scale, Iraq is one of the key countries in bp's portfolio. The Finance and Commercial Advisor reports to the Senior Finance Manager – Kirkuk (based in Sunbury).
About the role:
We are seeking a Finance and Commercial Advisor to play a critical role in establishing and shaping bp's Kirkuk business.
Key objectives of the role include:
* Developing finance processes/systems to onboard Kirkuk
* Building and protecting bp's value through commercial optimization
* Ensuring consistent stakeholder and agreement management
* Skillful management of commercial projects
* Rigorous application of PPM and investment governance
As Kirkuk is a new business, significant effort through 2026 will involve setting up the necessary agreements (~15 to be finalized in 2026), commercial operations framework and processes to establish and run the business.
What you will deliver:
Joint Venture & Partner Management
* Organize and participate in partner meetings
* Protect bp's rights and monitor compliance with agreements/contracts
* Support bp's interactions (correspondence, presentations, minutes) with partners, governments, collaborators
* Ensure effective messaging with partners and field operator
Commercial Operations
* Lead/support delivery of commercial processes and systems for onboarding Kirkuk
* Collaborate with other functions, field operator, and Iraqi authorities
* Lead/support broader strategy conversations and initiatives
* Lead/support delivery of commercial agreements and enduring commercial tasks
* Provide commercial support and advice to field operator
Economic Analysis
* Run and develop economic models
* Deliver investment governance as required
Commercial Projects
* Lead/support business development across value chains
* Monitor and lead/support execution of new projects
Planning & Performance Management
* Lead/support delivery of planning and performance management processes/systems
* Coordinate development of in-year and multi-year budgets/forecasts
* Ensure value-based scenarios in plans and forecasts
* Integrate plans and forecasts cross-functionally and challenge as needed
* Proactively monitor business performance and share insights with leadership
Leadership and Capability
* Build and maintain an inclusive work environment
* Identify and implement simplification and efficiency initiatives
* Proactively coach and develop finance capability in the region
* Work effectively across organizational boundaries in a multicultural, start-up environment
What you will need to be successful:
* University degree in Finance, Economics or a related discipline (or equivalent).
* Strong understanding of the upstream oil and gas value chain.
* Experience with commercial and contractual structures, including managing rights, obligations and risks within agreements.
* Proven ability to lead finance or commercial processes and deliver high‑quality insights.
* Strong analytical and numerical skills, with knowledge of industry standards (e.g.impairment testing).
* Sound understanding of commercial and financial risks, value drivers, mitigations and uncertainties.
* Understanding of economics evaluations and key metrics
* Highly self‑motivated with the ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
* Excellent partner management, influencing and communication skills (written and verbal).
Desirable Criteria
* Experience with Profit Sharing Contracts (PSC) and Technical Service Contracts (TSC)
* Proven commercial acumen; experience with partners, NOCs, governments
* Fluent Arabic speaker
