Work pattern
The Software Developer role may be suitable for hybrid working (part in the office, part from home). This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the advertised location will be your contractual place of work.
This is a full-time opportunity (37 hours per week). We would also consider applicants wishing to work a minimum of 33 hours per week, and we will consider job share where possible. We aim to agree a working pattern that works for everyone.

Join the Met Office's Data Services team - an innovative, friendly group at the forefront of developing scalable cloud-based solutions. We deliver critical weather and climate data to users across the UK and beyond, via scalable APIs and cloud-native services to ensure fast, reliable access to forecast and observation data for emergencies, government, businesses and the public.
As a Software Developer in Data Services, you will engineer solutions using Python, Java and AWS Cloud Computing to bridge advanced scientific modelling with the platforms our users rely on. You will work with the output of our supercomputing capabilities, handle terabytes of data daily, and focus on system performance, scalability and reliability.
This role offers the chance to contribute to modern, cloud-based solutions with wide-reaching positive impact. The role is aligned to Government Digital and Data Profession Capability Framework on GOV.UK.

Compensation and benefits
As a Software Developer in Data Services, your total reward package will be up to £49,806 annually, which includes:
* An outstanding Civil Service pension, with an average employer contribution of 28.97%
* Recruitment Retention Allowance (RRA) paid £2,200 per annum as a market supplement to reflect demand for your skills (from April 2024 to March 2026)
* Annual Leave starting at 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) after 5 years, with option to buy or sell up to 5 days per year

Roles and responsibilities
* Systems Design. Translate logical designs into physical designs, produce detailed designs, and document work using required standards and tools. Design systems with manageable risk, complexity and meaningful impact. Work with well understood technology and identify appropriate patterns.
* Development process optimisation. Explain and support process efficiency improvements, identify deficiencies and help implement improvements.
* Programming and build (software engineering). Collaborate to review specifications and design, code, test and document programs or scripts of medium-to-high complexity using appropriate standards and tools.
* Service support. Help fix faults following agreed procedures and carry out maintenance tasks on infrastructure.
* Systems integration. Build and test simple interfaces between systems and contribute to more complex integration as part of a team.
