Assistant Design Manager – Freelance (Calvert-Based) A major infrastructure joint venture delivering one of the UK's most significant high-speed rail projects is seeking an experienced Assistant Design Manager to join its team on a freelance basis. This is an opportunity to contribute to a programme of national importance, working alongside industry-leading engineering and construction specialists.
The Role The position sits at the heart of design coordination, assurance, and technical delivery. Key responsibilities include:
Participating in readiness reviews, DDRs and IDRs within your area of responsibility.
Coordinating the production and delivery of typical section drawings, standard details, and supporting design documentation.
Managing day-to-day design activities, including verification, technical review, and interdisciplinary checking.
Overseeing third-party design reviews, such as Category 3 checks, and ensuring alignment with construction teams to maintain buildability and programme compliance.
Ensuring seamless coordination of design and assurance deliverables across interfacing organisations.
Preparing and managing responses to commercial communications (TQs, EWs, EIs, CEs etc.) via CEMAR.
Organising Risk Reduction meetings and tracking actions through to completion.
Reviewing technical and assurance deliverables prior to acceptance by senior design leadership.
Acting as a key link between designers and construction delivery teams for permanent works design management.
Maintaining close collaboration with the client's technical team and overseeing registers such as assumptions and departures.
Monitoring technical elements of the MIDP and supporting internal and external project meetings.
About You The ideal candidate will bring:
A degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management.
Strong experience in major civil engineering works.
Previous exposure to a similar design management or coordination role.
Proficiency in MS Office and confidence managing your own workload.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to build positive working relationships across teams and supply chain partners.
An understanding of HS2 Act requirements (or similar legislative frameworks) is advantageous.
