The Department of War Studies has a large and diverse faculty. About the role
The Department of War Studies seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Foreign Policy and Grand Strategy Education to contribute to the Department’s teaching and research capacity on issues related to foreign policy and grand strategy. This is a 1-year, fixed term post.
This post is offered on the Academic Education Pathway (AEP) and is focused on the delivery of education, education-related scholarship and leadership in education.
The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering high-quality, innovative undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of BA and MA teaching in the Department of War Studies. Modules may include, at the BA level, Conflict and Diplomacy, History of the International System, Global Cold War, Grand Strategy and the Foundations of Anglo-American Statecraft, Statecraft and Diplomacy, Foreign Policy and National Security in the 21st Century, and Diplomacy and Crises. At the MA level, modules may include National Security Studies, Diplomacy and Foreign Policy, Foreign Policy Analysis in an Age of Great Power Competition, and Small States and International Security.
The successful candidate will work with students from a wide range of backgrounds and will be responsible for enabling student success.
The postholder will also undertake and publish high-quality scholarship and play a role in the institutional and intellectual development of War Studies and undertake Departmental, School, Faculty and University administrative duties as required.
This is a full time post (35 Hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract until 31/08/2026
About You
To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
* PhD awarded in Foreign Policy, International Relations, History, or another relevant field
* Ability to deliver innovative and effective teaching to undergraduate and/or postgraduate students on issues related to Foreign Policy and Grand Strategy, especially on some combination of the modules listed in the role purpose section
* Demonstrated commitment to student success, engaging the student body and enhancing the student experience.
* An emerging track record of publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals.
* Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
* Excellent communication and presentation skills and proficiency in academic writing.
* Willingness to contribute to diversity and inclusion efforts within the department.
* For an appointment at Grade 7, candidates must have a PhD thesis published or in press as a monograph AND at least 2 papers published/in press in peer-reviewed; OR at least 5 research papers published/in press in high-quality peer reviewed journals. For an appointment at Grade 7, candidates must also show proven ability in and experience of academic leadership
* Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) or on-track to receive fellowship in the next 1-2 years.
* A track record of wider administrative contribution to the delivery of departmental activities.
* Familiarity with, experience of, and/or an emerging agenda for innovative pedagogies as well as curriculum and teaching design
* Emerging track record in dissemination of teaching innovations and engagement with external bodies.
* Experience supervising UG/PGT dissertations and/or PhD students
