Offer description

Overview

Applications are invited for a Research Assistant/ Research Associate position to work as part of the flagship Centre for Landscape Regeneration (CLR). The CLR undertakes research to regenerate the British countryside using cost-effective nature-based solutions, with the aim of biodiversity recovery and climate mitigation and adaptation. The post holder will work closely with Prof. Andrew Friend and the wider CLR team and may participate in a wide range of CLR, departmental, and University activities, including seminars, teaching, and interactions with research groups.

The successful candidate will contribute to the assessment of how alternative land management practices impact greenhouse-gas fluxes through the development and application of modelling tools. The work will involve model development on the Cambridge High Performance Computing facility, where the current code is implemented. The candidate will extend the model to treat different management interventions, peat growth and decay, and interactions with horizontal water flows. This work will be underpinned by in situ observations of GHG fluxes and hydrological information from CLR team members across three landscapes, including partners at UK CEH.

Responsibilities

* Develop and apply sophisticated modelling tools to assess greenhouse-gas fluxes under different land management practices.
* Extend the existing model to treat management interventions, peat growth/decay, and interactions with horizontal water flows.
* Utilise the Cambridge High Performance Computing facility for model development and execution.
* Collaborate with CLR team members providing in situ observations of GHG fluxes and hydrological data.

Qualifications and Experience

* Background in simulation modelling with a proven ability to communicate results.
* PhD (or equivalent experience) or near completion; applications from those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be considered.
* Background in environmental or related sciences is encouraged, but candidates with numerically oriented backgrounds (computer science, mathematics, or engineering) will also be considered.
* Strong motivation, excellent time management, and a track record of delivering project outputs; experience with interdisciplinary team work is desired.

Salary, Terms, and Appointment

* Salary for Research Associate: GBP 37,694 – GBP 46,049 (Grade 7). Appointment at Research Associate level requires a PhD.
* Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD may be appointed as Research Assistant (Grade 5, Point 38 – GBP 34,610) initially, moving to Research Associate upon PhD confirmation.
* Fixed-term position with funds available until 31 January 2027.
