Overview
NHS Tayside is seeking a Microbiology Consultant to join a team of eight specialists at Ninewells Hospital. The role involves providing Bacteriology/Virology diagnostics and Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) services in a well‑equipped laboratory that processes over 325,000 investigations annually. The position is offered on a 10 personal assistant (PA) contract with funding available for additional PAs.
Responsibilities
* Provide diagnostic, treatment and IPC advice across the health board area.
* Perform Bacteriology and Virology testing using MALDI‑TOF, BacTAlert, Vitek 2, Cepheid GeneXpert, Siemens Atellica, Diasorin Liaison, Hologic Panther, SeeGene and real‑time PCR platforms.
* Coordinate with clinical areas such as ICU, surgical HDU, orthopaedics and neonatology.
* Participate in an out‑of‑hours on‑call rota (currently 1:7) with an availability supplement and on‑call payment.
* Maintain UKAS accreditation standards and support continuous professional development.
* Engage with the Infection Prevention and Control team, IPC nurses and administrative staff to deliver IPC services.
Qualifications
* CESR, full GMC registration, and licence to practise.
* On the specialist register or within 6 months of the anticipated award of a CCT at the time of interview.
* Specialist training and experience in Microbiology and IPC preferred.
* Eligible for a Locum Consultant post (up to 12 months) if not listed on the GMC Specialist Register.
Working Hours & Benefits
* Full‑time contract of 10 PAs per week.
* Applications considered for part‑time work.
* 2 PAs allocated for supporting professional activities.
