Overview
This is a brand-new opportunity for a consultant psychiatrist based in Roseanne House, Welwyn Garden City. The role involves providing diagnostic assessments and treatment to patients with severe, complex, and high‑risk psychiatric conditions as part of the Adult Community Mental Health Service (ACMHS).
Responsibilities
* Manage, appraise and give professional supervision to Specialty Doctors and junior medical staff in line with Trust personnel policies.
* Ensure junior medical staff comply with the New Deal and Working Time Directive.
* Undertake administrative duties associated with patient care.
* Record clinical activity accurately and submit promptly to the Information Department.
* Participate in service and business planning for the locality and, where relevant, the wider mental health service.
* Take part in annual consultant appraisal and in an annual job‑plan review with the line manager.
* Attend and participate in the Trust’s academic programme, including lectures and seminars as part of the internal CPD programme.
* Maintain professional registration with the GMC, Mental Health Act Section 12(2) approval, and abide by professional codes of conduct.
* Work with local managers and professional colleagues to run services efficiently and contribute to the medical input in management.
* Comply with Trust procedures, standing orders and financial instructions, and take an active role in financial management of the service.
* Provide psychiatric expertise to the multidisciplinary team.
* Conduct outpatient clinics, home visits and participate in multidisciplinary case discussions.
* Liaise effectively with primary care and mainstream mental health services, providing advice to Primary Care Nurses and additional role reimbursement workers.
Qualifications
* Essential – MBBS or equivalent medical qualification; MRCPsych or equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
* Desirable – Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management; relevant higher degree such as MD, PhD, MSc or other clinical qualifications.
Eligibility
* Essential – Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise; Section 12 approved; CCT in Psychiatry or inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register in psychiatry or within six months of achieving CCT/CESR at the time of interview.
* Desirable – In good standing with GMC regarding warnings and conditions on practice.
Clinical Skills, Knowledge & Experience
* Essential – Experience of the full range of clinical responsibilities expected of a consultant in general adult psychiatry; collaborative working with social care and other agencies; experience with service users who have complex needs; excellent oral and written communication; comprehensive clinical skills using a bio‑psychosocial perspective; ability to manage clinical complexity and make decisions based on evidence.
* Desirable – Wide range of specialist and subspecialist experience relevant to the post within NHS or comparable service; high level of medical knowledge related to the responsibilities of the post.
Academic Skills & Lifelong Learning
* Essential – Ability to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training; participation in continuous professional development; engagement in research or service evaluation; use and appraisal of clinical evidence; active participation in clinical audit.
* Desirable – Evidence of achievement in education, research, audit and service improvement (awards, prizes, presentations, publications); holding a full valid driving licence and access to a car (unless disabled).
