Overview

The Paediatrics dept at Worcester Acute Hospitals NHS Trust seeks x2 Senior Clinical Fellows (x1 12 month post and x1 6 month post). These 6 and 12 month opportunities offer rotational experience across general paediatrics, neonatology, emergency care, and sub-specialties. The post holders will gain advanced skills in acute and chronic management, leadership, and multidisciplinary coordination, preparing for consultant-level practice. These posts include on-call duties (Tier 2 rota), ward rounds, clinics, procedures, teaching, and quality improvement projects. Training is supervised by an Educational Supervisor, with ePortfolio maintenance and ARCP progression aligned to GMC and RCPCH standards.

Applicants must have completed core paediatrics (ST1-ST4 or equivalent), with at least 48 months' postgraduate experience (including 36 months in paediatrics) by start date. Clinical experience equivalent to ST4 level from other grades or overseas is accepted. Full GMC registration with licence to practise is required, along with full MRCPCH membership.

The typical candidate will demonstrate Level 1 RCPCH competencies and be preparing for higher training. Training includes inpatient care, ambulatory clinics, specialty outpatients, procedures, and competencies, supervised by a named Educational Supervisor.


Main duties

Main duties of the job

These Posts are full-time (40 hours per week), with up to 8 additional hours on average via on-call. The working pattern includes 24/7 cover, with the Trust committed to flexible working; applicants seeking part-time or flexible bases are welcome.

Provide high-quality service to paediatric patients of Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, General Practitioners, and multidisciplinary teams.

* Deliver care across sites, attending multi-disciplinary meetings (potentially cross-county). Work may extend to GP surgeries/health centres, with potential job plan revisions.
* Manage continuing care and treatment of patients, performing clinical duties per job plan, delegating appropriately and training staff.
* Support acute paediatrics, neonates, and A&E for timely care and patient flow.
* Lead ward rounds, triage referrals, and manage complex cases.
* Prepare patients for treatments/procedures, including post-operative care.
* Offer consultations and advisory services to colleagues, including timely discharge summaries.

Job responsibilities

This job description, aligned with RCPCH Progress+ Level 2 capabilities and job plan, will be reviewed annually with the Clinical Director, Divisional Director, and Educational Supervisor, on behalf of the Chief Medical Officer, to reflect evolving clinical responsibilities and service needs. A suitably experienced Senior Clinical Fellow post-holder will be expected to:

* Provide high-quality service to paediatric patients of Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, General Practitioners, and multidisciplinary teams.
* Deliver care across sites, attending multi-disciplinary meetings (potentially cross-county). Work may extend to GP surgeries/health centres, with potential job plan revisions.
* Manage continuing care and treatment of patients, performing clinical duties per job plan, delegating appropriately and training staff.
* Support acute paediatrics, neonates, and A&E for timely care and patient flow.
* Lead ward rounds, triage referrals, and manage complex cases.
* Prepare patients for treatments/procedures, including post-operative care.
* Offer consultations and advisory services to colleagues, including timely discharge summaries.
* Collaborate on high-quality, timely service delivery, meeting Trust and departmental objectives.
* Supervise, train, and manage junior staff (ST1-ST4), conducting teaching, assessments, and contributing to CPD.
* Participate in Tier 2 on-call rota for 24/7 emergency/urgent services, shared equally.
* Engage in clinical audit and quality improvement under local arrangements.
* Maintain continuing professional development with Trust support, staying current with evidence-based practice.
* Adhere to professional guidelines like GMC's Good Medical Practice and Duties of a Doctor.

You will join the middle-grade rota, including on-call shifts for 24/7 services, with ePortfolio documentation of progress against RCPCH key capabilities.

Qualifications

Essential

* Eligible for full GMC Registration with a Licence to practise at the time of appointment.
* MB ChB, MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
* Satisfactory completion of ST1-2 training, or equivalent.
* Membership examination with the relevant UK Royal College.
* APLS/EPALS Certification.
* NLS

Desirable

* Higher degree.
* Attendance at recognised management courses.
* Formal qualification in teaching/education.

Experience

Essential

* Completed at least four years full time postgraduate training (or equivalent gained on part time basis) or have equivalent experience and competencies.
* Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required at CT/ST3 level in relevant specialty. Equivalent years experience in a relevant specialty from other medical grades including from overseas will also be accepted.
* Experience of working in multidisciplinary teams.
* Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems, both emergency and elective, within specialty and sufficient experience.
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.

Desirable

* Previous experience working in the NHS within the specialty of minimum of 12 months.
* Ability to use the evidence based and clinical audit to support decision making.
* Taster weeks or electives in paediatrics.
